The Marlins exercised Alcantara's $21 million club option for 2027 on Friday.
Alcantara collected a 3.87 ERA and 153:59 K:BB over a league-high 214 innings this season. The 31-year-old is a tier below other frontline starting pitchers when it comes to swing-and-miss, but Alcantara has re-established himself as baseball's preeminent workhorse since coming back from Tommy John surgery. Alcantara is set to reach free agency next winter.

Alcantara picked up the save in Sunday's 5-3 win over Atlanta. He allowed no hits or walks while striking out one over one inning.
With Miami opting against having him make one last start over the weekend, Alcantara was deployed as a reliever for the third time this season in Sunday's regular-season finale. The veteran right-hander was able to work through a leadoff error and retire the next three batters in order to secure his third save. Alcantara will end the campaign with a major-league-leading 214 innings, posting a 13-11 record with a 3.87 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 153:59 K:BB across 36 appearances (33 starts).

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Thursday that Alcantara will not make a start this weekend against Atlanta, Stephen Strom of Marlins Radio Network reports.
Alcantara had been penciled in to take the ball Saturday in the Marlins' final regular-season series, but the club has decided against having the righty make another start. The right-hander has notched two saves over the past week, as the Marlins have used him in relief on his throw days, and Alcantara will be available out of the bullpen this weekend. Alcantara has logged a league-high 213 innings this season and tied a career high with 33 starts.

Alcantara notched the save Wednesday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning.
The Marlins deployed Alcantara as their closer between starts for the second time this month, and the hurler induced a game-ending double play to seal it for Miami. The right-hander threw just 12 pitches Wednesday, so he remains firmly on track to take his next and final turn in the rotation Saturday against Atlanta. He has a 3.89 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 152:59 K:BB across 213 innings, converting both of his save opportunities as well.

Alcantara (13-11) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings to take the loss versus the Padres on Sunday.
After a midweek cameo as a closer, Alcantara was back in his usual starting role Sunday. It went about as well as his last few starts, which is to say not that well at all. He's given up at least four runs over each of his last five starts, allowing 23 runs across 27.1 innings in that span. Alcantara is at a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 152:59 K:BB through 212 innings over 34 games (33 starts) this season. The Miami ace is projected for one more start this year, which is expected to be at home versus Atlanta.

Alcantara walked one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
With the Marlins still technically holding onto thin playoff hopes, Alcantara stepped up just two days after his most recent start to close out this game. The Marlins are without Pete Fairbanks (hand) for the rest of the year, but Alcantara is not expected to move to the bullpen on a full-time basis. This was Alcantara's first relief appearance since he began his career with eight games out of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2017. The workhorse starter has a 3.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:58 K:BB through 206 innings over 33 games (32 starts) this year. Assuming Wednesday's appearance functioned as a between-starts bullpen session, Alcantara is lined up to pitch over the weekend in San Diego.
