  • Watson struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Thursday's 6-4 win over the Mariners.

Ben Joyce (shoulder) is done for the year, so Watson is poised to handle the closing duties in the last series of 2026. The 28-year-old Watson has allowed just one run with an 11:1 K:BB over 8.1 innings during September. He's at a 4.00 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 65:23 K:BB across 72 innings between the Angels and the Red Sox this season. He's converted four of six save chances and added eight holds.

  • Watson allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Mariners.

Watson has rebounded well after struggling late in August. He's on a seven-inning scoreless streak with a save and five holds over his last eight appearances. Watson got the save chance Tuesday since the Angels have been avoiding having Ben Joyce pitch consecutive days, and he worked a scoreless inning Monday on 20 pitches. For the year, Watson has a 3.99 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 60:22 K:BB over 70 innings between the Angels and the Red Sox. He's added three saves, eight holds and two blown saves, with the bulk of his high-leverage work coming with the Angels.

  • Watson earned the save in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Rangers, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

With Ben Joyce blowing a save in his appearance Friday, the Angels turned to Watson to secure a three-run lead in the ninth inning Saturday. The 28-year-old retired the heart of the Rangers' order on just seven pitches, notching his first save in an Angels uniform. He's yet to allow an earned run with his new club, posting a strong 8:1 K:BB through 5.1 innings since making his team debut Aug. 9. On the year, Watson has tallied three holds and two saves to go along with a 4.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 51:20 K:BB across 61 innings with the Angels and Red Sox.

  • The Angels claimed Watson off waivers from the Red Sox on Friday.

Watson was DFA'd by Boston earlier in the week after he posted a 4.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 43:19 K:BB across 55.2 innings out of the bullpen for the Red Sox this season. The Rule 5 pick handled himself reasonably well in his first taste of big-league action and will work out of the Angels' bullpen over the final two months of the season.

  • The Red Sox designated Watson for assignment Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

The Rule 5 pick lasted on the active roster for four months, but he'll now clear out in order to make room for the team's trade-deadline acquisitions. Watson will now be available on waivers, and if he clears, he must be offered back to the Giants.

  • Watson allowed three walks while striking out one over 2.1 hitless and scoreless innings in Saturday's 6-5 extra-innings loss to Cincinnati.

Watson, a Rule 5 pick, made his major-league debut in the sixth inning in a not so low-leverage situation. The Red Sox were trailing by two runs when the rookie entered with two outs and two runners on. After walking the first batter he faced, Watson twice thought he'd struck out Eugenio Suarez on called third strikes and walked off the mound, but both calls were challenged and overturned. The right-hander eventually gathered himself and got the slugger to ground out to second base before working scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Despite the tension surrounding Saturday's appearance, Watson is expected to remain in a low-leverage role.
