OUT

Out · expected back around Feb 1

Helsley was limited to only 15.1 innings in 2026 because of elbow trouble, making his decision to pick up his player option and remain in Baltimore a fairly easy one. The reliever pitched in a rehab game in September, so he should be healthy for spring training, barring any setbacks. Helsley figures to be in the mix to close games for the Orioles in 2027, though Felix Bautista and/or Rico Garcia are also options for the ninth inning.

  • Helsley (elbow) will exercise his $14 million player option for 2027, Andy Kostka of TheBanner.com reports.

  • President of baseball operations Mike Elias said Saturday that Helsley (elbow) will be shut down for the remainder of the season, Andy Kostka of TheBanner.com reports.

Helsley had been working his way back from right elbow inflammation that forced him onto the injured list in late June, but he hasn't pitched in a rehab game at Triple-A Norfolk since last Saturday. With his progress stalling, the Orioles have officially now shifted their focus to getting the 32-year-old ready for 2027. He'll finish 2026 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.43 WHIP alongside a 21:9 K:BB across 15.1 innings.

  • Helsley (elbow) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, Matt Betts of MLB.com reports.

Helsley has been on the 15-day injured list since late June with right elbow discomfort, and the right-hander threw 24 pitches in live batting practice Tuesday. The rehab outing will be his first game action in over two months, so he'll likely need to get a few appearances under his belt before becoming an option to rejoin the Orioles. A return before the end of the season remains in the cards, though.

  • Helsley (elbow) will throw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

It will be Helsley's first time facing hitters since he went down with right elbow inflammation in late June. If things go well Tuesday, Helsley's next step could be a rehab assignment. The veteran reliever is tracking toward a return later this month, though the Orioles could opt to shut him down if they fall out of the wild-card race.

  • Manager Craig Albernaz said Monday that Helsley (elbow) will throw live batting practice Tuesday or Wednesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Helsley last pitched for Baltimore on June 27 due to elbow inflammation. He's been throwing since early August but will finally face hitters this week, giving him a chance to pitch again this regular season. Helsley has been limited to 17 appearances this season, registering eight saves with a 4.11 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB across 15.1 innings.

  • Helsley (elbow) threw a bullpen session over the weekend, Andy Kostka of TheBanner.com reports.

Helsley threw 15 pitches in his first mound session since landing on the injured list in early July with elbow inflammation. He's slated to throw a few more bullpen sessions within the next couple of weeks before progressing to facing hitters and/or rehab games, but the 32-year-old reliever is still hopeful to pitch for the Orioles again before the season is over.
