Latest news

  • The Padres will start Ray in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Saturday.

With Michael King and Nick Pivetta making starts in the Padres' wild-card series victory over the Cubs, Ray was the obvious choice to take the ball in the lid-lifter versus the Brewers. Ray struggled in nine starts after landing in San Diego at the trade deadline, posting a 5.02 ERA and 33:27 K:BB over 43 frames.

  • Ray allowed one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Ray's short outing came down to inefficiency -- he needed 84 pitches (55 strikes) to get just 10 outs. It's been a bumpy September for the veteran lefty, who has allowed 14 runs over 16.2 innings with a 14:11 K:BB this month. His regular season is likely done at a 13-8 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 140:84 K:BB over 31 games (30 starts) between the Padres and the Giants. Ray is lined up to pitch in the wild-card series next week, in the likely event the Padres secure a playoff spot.

  • Ray (13-8) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

After giving up five runs in back-to-back starts to begin September, Ray responded with his 13th quality start of the season Wednesday, though he was trending even better before giving up a two-run home run to Kyle Karros in the sixth inning. The southpaw has a 3.60 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 138:83 K:BB across 162.1 innings over 30 games (29 starts) on the year. Ray is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Dodgers.

  • Ray (12-8) allowed five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings Friday, earning the win over the Giants.

Ray didn't exactly produce a revenge game against the team that dealt him to a division rival at the trade deadline, but he did enough to get the win. He's now allowed 10 runs across 7.1 innings over his two starts in September. For the season, the southpaw is at a 3.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 132:81 K:BB across 156.1 innings through 29 games (28 starts). He'll look to build off his 100th career win when he takes the mound in Colorado next week.

  • Ray (11-8) took the loss against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one batter over 2.1 innings.

Ray breezed through the first inning, retiring the side in order on three groundouts while tossing just eight pitches. The rest of the lefty's start went in the complete opposite direction, however, as he gave up four runs on three hits and three walks in the second frame and another run on two hits and a walk in the third before being pulled. Overall, Ray threw just 36 of 68 pitches for strikes and notched only four whiffs. Control has long been an issue for the veteran hurler, and things haven't changed since he's joined the Padres, as Ray has now walked 20 batters over 28.2 innings across six starts with his new club. He had mostly gotten away with the free passes coming into Saturday, yielding two or fewer runs in four straight outings, but there's always going to be a risk of an implosion with a pitcher who puts runners on via walks as frequently as Ray does.

  • Ray did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Rays, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings.

Ray's only blemish came when Junior Caminero led off the fourth inning with a solo homer. The left-hander has now held opponents to two or fewer runs in four of his five starts since joining the Padres, posting a 3.42 ERA during that span, though his control remains a concern with a 5.5 BB/9. Through 149 innings this season, Ray owns a 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 126:73 K:BB. His next start is scheduled to be against the Yankees on Saturday.
