  • The Padres removed Vasquez from their NLDS roster Monday.

Vasquez was added to the roster as a replacement for Walker Buehler (personal), who was on paternity leave. With Buehler back in tow, Vasquez will exit the roster. Vasquez did not make an appearance during the first two games of the series.

  • Vasquez was added to the Padres' NLDS roster Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Vasquez will be filling in for Walker Buehler, who was placed on the postseason paternity list Saturday. Once Buehler returns, Vasquez will have to be removed from the Friars' roster.

  • Vasquez did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks over six innings in a 9-4 win over Arizona. He struck out two.

Making his first start since Sept. 1, Vasquez was sharp and economical, allowing just one run in the sixth inning before departing at 68 pitches (54 strikes). Bouncing between the rotation and bullpen, the right-hander will end the regular season with a 10-6 record, 3.90 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB across 140.2 innings (32 appearances). If San Diego uses Vasquez in the postseason, it will likely be as a reliever.

  • Vasquez is slated to start Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

With their win Saturday, the Padres are locked in as the No. 4 seed in the National League playoffs and will have little at stake in the regular-season finale. As such, the Padres will likely use Game 162 to rest multiple key position players and pitchers, which clears the way for Vasquez to pick up his first start since Sept. 1. Over 31 appearances (22 starts) on the campaign, Vasquez owns a 10-6 record, 4.01 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB across 134.2 innings.

  • Vasquez will be available out of the San Diego bullpen beginning Monday against the Nationals, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Vasquez has pitched especially well in his last three starts, going 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.66 WHIP over 16.2 innings, but with Nick Pivetta (forearm) ready to return to the Padres' rotation, Vasquez will transition to a relief role. Pivetta stretched out to only 64 pitches in his final rehab outing, so it may be a sort of piggyback situation with Vasquez in that rotation spot, at least initially.

  • Vasquez didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Reds, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

The right-hander failed to complete five innings for the first time since July 30, tossing 50 of 69 pitches for strikes before being lifted from a 2-2 tie. Vasquez has allowed more than two runs just once in 10 appearances since the All-Star break, posting a 2.68 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB over 43.2 innings while going 4-0, but despite that success he could be headed for the bullpen in September with both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (forearm) closing in on their returns from the IL.
