Mathews (2-4) took the loss against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings.
Mathews was handed an early 2-0 lead, but he gave up an RBI single to Jackson Chourio in the third before yielding a two-run homer to Brice Turang in the fifth that generated what turned out to be the game-winning runs for the Brewers. Saturday was the fourth time in nine major-league starts that Mathews fanned at least seven batters, and the 25-year-old southpaw showed he could handle himself in the big leagues since making his MLB debut Aug. 1. He'll end the 2026 campaign with a 3.83 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB over 49.1 innings.

Mathews didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Washington, striking out three while allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks in seven innings.
CJ Abrams popped a two-run shot off Mathews in the sixth inning, but the hurler was still able to hang in Sunday for a quality start. The rookie southpaw is potentially working his way into the Cardinals' pitching plans for 2027, as he's either posted a quality start or tossed at least five innings while yielding two runs or fewer in five consecutive outings. His final appearance of the year is slated to come in Milwaukee, where he'll bring a decent 3.65 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB over 44.1 innings.

Mathews (2-3) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.2 innings to earn the win over the Giants on Monday.
Mathews has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings. He limited the damage to Jonah Cox's RBI single in the sixth inning of this contest, marking the fourth time in seven games in which Mathews has given up just one run. Through 37.1 innings, he's maintained a 3.62 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 36:16 K:BB. The left-hander is projected to make his next start at home versus the Nationals.

Mathews (1-3) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings to take the loss versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Mathews served up solo home runs to Bryce Eldridge and Christian Koss over the first two innings of the game. While Mathews was able to settle in from there, he didn't get enough run support. This was the rookie southpaw's first quality start in the majors. He's at a 4.11 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB through 30.2 innings through six starts. Mathews is lined up for a rematch against the Giants in St. Louis early next week.
