  • The Reds claimed Schultz off waivers from the Nationals on Monday.

In 40 appearances at the major-league level, Schultz has collected a 5.53 ERA and 60:20 K:BB covering 57 innings. The 28-year-old will compete for a job in the Reds' bullpen, assuming he's still on the roster when spring training rolls around.

  • The Nationals optioned Schultz to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday.

The move comes after the Nationals' 5-2 loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, when Schultz gave up three earned runs on four hits while striking out one batter in two-thirds of an inning. The 28-year-old right-hander will return to Rochester, where he has a 2.30 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 15.2 innings.

  • The Nationals recalled Schultz from Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Schultz has logged 30.2 innings for the Nationals this season, posting a 5.87 ERA and 31:11 K:BB. The 28-year-old will operate in middle relief out of the Washington bullpen.

  • The Nationals optioned Schultz to Triple-A Rochester following Tuesday's 14-9 loss to the Phillies.

Schultz surrendered two earned runs on three hits and one walk while collecting just one out during Tuesday's game, bringing his ERA to 5.87 and his WHIP to 1.60 through 30.2 frames on the season. His poor performance will now cost him his spot in the big-league bullpen, and he'll look to get back on track at Rochester. A corresponding move will likely be made before Wednesday's contest.

  • Schultz will serve as the Nationals' opening pitcher in Friday's game against the Padres, Kyle Williams of TheBanner.com reports.

Schultz has performed well overall this season, but his ERA remains inflated at 5.30 through 18.2 frames after giving up six runs to the Mets in a May 18 appearance that lasted just one-third of an inning. He's now set for his first opening assignment of the campaign and is likely to remain in the game for an inning or two before Andrew Alvarez takes over in bulk relief.

  • Schultz (0-1) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Mets after allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and a walk over one-third of an inning.

Schultz entered the game in the 11th inning but couldn't get the job done. Even though he retired the first batter he faced on a sac bunt, Schultz allowed six straight baserunners before departing the contest. The game was so out of reach by the time he was lifted that manager Blake Butera decided to send third baseman Jorbit Vivas to pitch the rest of the way instead of deploying another arm out of the bullpen. Schultz had given up just five earned runs in his previous 13 appearances (17.2 innings) this season, but this was likely a one-off, disastrous outing for the young right-hander.
