Sandoval wasn't included on the Red Sox's roster for their American League Wild Card Series with the Yankees that began Tuesday.
Boston's decision to keep Sandoval off the roster doesn't come as a major surprise, after he turned in a 5.15 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 64.2 innings in 13 starts upon returning from the 60-day injured list shortly before the All-Star break. The veteran southpaw didn't fare much better while shifting to a relief role for the final week of the regular season, yielding three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six in 5.2 innings over two appearances. Sandoval is scheduled for free agency this offseason and will likely be donning a new uniform in 2027.

Sandoval (1-7) took the loss against the Rays on Sunday, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts over seven innings.
Sandoval was tagged for four runs in the first inning but still managed a season-high seven frames, throwing 69 of 94 pitches for strikes with 14 whiffs. It goes down as the southpaw's fifth straight loss, and he's yielded at least four runs in each of his four September outings. It was Sandoval's first career start against the Angels, with whom he spent six seasons from 2019 to 2024. He didn't have his best stuff Tuesday, giving up at least one run in three of his six frames, and the 10 hits he allowed were his most in a start since May 12, 2024 against the Royals (11). Sandoval has taken the loss in five of his last six outings and sports a 4.58 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 57:27 K:BB over 55 innings this season. He's tentatively slated to start next week on the road against the Rangers.

After holding Seattle scoreless through two innings, things fell apart for Sandoval in the third, when the Mariners put up four runs, including three that came with two outs.
