Higgins cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Louisville.
After losing his place on the active roster Sunday following Jose Trevino's return from the injured list, Higgins will now also be booted off the Reds' 40-man roster. The 33-year-old backstop posted a .545 OPS across 14 games with the big club and hasn't been better since moving to Triple-A, slashing just .125/.375/.125 over 48 plate appearances. Fellow catcher Will Banfield was selected to the 40-man roster in a corresponding move.

The Reds optioned Higgins to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.
With backup catcher Jose Trevino (hamstring) returning from the injured list, Higgins was no longer needed as a depth option behind top backstop Tyler Stephenson. Following his May 17 promotion from Louisville, Higgins saw action in just eight games for the Reds and slashed .250/.294/.313 with three RBI and one run across 20 plate appearances.

The 33-year-old was designated for assignment by Cincinnati last Wednesday, but he'll get another look in the majors with Jose Trevino (hamstring) landing on the injured list. Cincinnati moved Higgins off its 40-man roster to free up a spot for right-hander Chris Paddack, who inked a one-year deal with the Reds on Wednesday. Higgins had been playing at Triple-A Louisville for the past two and a half weeks but was up with the Reds earlier in April, going 2-for-10 with a walk and an RBI over six games during his brief time in the majors.

Higgins' run-scoring sacrifice fly was all the Reds could do against former teammate Nick Martinez. The RBI was the first for Higgins, who is 2-for-10 since being called up to replace Jose Trevino (back). Reports indicate Trevino will be activated Sunday, which should end Higgins' current stay in the majors.
