Latest news

  • The Phillies informed Kerkering following Saturday's game that he will be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Kerkering was told bluntly that the team can no longer pitch him with so much on the line and just seven games remaining in the regular season. The right-hander gave up four runs over one inning in Saturday's loss, bringing his ERA to 4.97 over 58 frames for the year. His ERA is now over 9.00 since the All-Star break.

  • Kerkering picked up the save Sunday against the Angels. He allowed one run on two hits and no walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings.

Kerkering recorded the final out of the eighth inning before surrendering a run in the ninth frame, though the Phillies had built enough of a lead for him to secure his second save. Jhoan Duran, who owns a 1.64 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 28 saves, pitched two innings Saturday and was potentially unavailable Sunday. Kerkering has operated as one of Philadelphia's top right-handed relievers, posting a 3.91 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 56:27 K:BB and 16 holds across 53 innings this season.

  • Kerkering threw a clean sixth inning with no strikeouts to pick up a hold Wednesday against the Nationals.

Wednesday's hold marked Kerkering's 13th of the campaign. The right-hander has been a quality high-leverage arm in Philadelphia's bullpen for the most part despite a lack of save chances, posting a 3.27 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 48:25 K:BB across 44 innings with a lone save in three opportunities during 2026.

  • Kerkering (4-0) was charged with a blown save but credited with the win Tuesday against Washington, allowing three runs on two hits and one walk in the eighth inning. He struck out two.

Kerkering squandered a 6-5 lead in the eighth frame, but the Phillies immediately came storming back in the form of an eight-run ninth inning to get the hurler off the hook. The 25-year-old right-hander has been a fairly effective setup man for closer Jhoan Duran in 2026 otherwise, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB with five holds across 29.2 innings.

  • Kerkering walked one and struck out one while giving up an unearned run in the 10th inning Friday to record his first save of the season in an 11-9 win over the Pirates.

With Jhoan Duran not yet pitching on back-to-back days and Brad Keller having worked Wednesday and Thursday, interim manager Don Mattingly has to get creative with his high-leverage arms. Jose Alvarado struck out the side in a scoreless ninth, and then after the Phillies rang up three runs in the top of the 10th, Kerkering got the call and allowed only the phantom runner to score. The right-hander hasn't seen much usage in key situations this season, and through 16.1 innings over 18 appearances he sports a 2.20 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB with just one win and one hold in addition to Friday's save.

  • Kerkering threw a clean seventh inning Friday against Miami. He struck out one.

Following a delayed start to the season due to a hamstring strain he sufferend during the spring, Kerkering is off to a solid start as one of Philadelphia's high-leverage arms. The right-hander has rattled off seven consecutive scoreless outings, and he has a 2.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB with one hold across his first 11.2 innings on the year.
