Latest news

  • Schanuel (side) returned from his rehab assignment Friday and isn't expected to get activated from the injured list before the end of the season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Schanuel was cleared to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake last weekend, but he appeared in just one game Sunday and hasn't played since. He rejoined the team Friday to undergo further testing and receive treatment, and although the results of his latest tests are unknown, manager Kurt Suzuki said that the 24-year-old will most likely be shut down for the year. Vaughn Grissom is expected to continue working as the Angels' primary first baseman for the rest of the regular season.

  • Schanuel (intercostal) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake this weekend, Erica Weston of Angels Broadcast Television reports.

Schanuel has been shelved for the past three weeks with a right intercostal strain, but he's ready to test things out in a game setting. Because the first baseman's absence has been relatively brief, he should be ready for activation sometime next week if all goes well on his rehab assignment.

  • Schanuel (side) is scheduled to resume swinging a bat Tuesday, Jack Janes of TheSportingTribune.com reports.

It's the first time Schanuel will do any kind of hitting work since he landed on the injured list Aug. 22 with an intercostal strain. The 24-year-old resumed participating in agility work last week, though there are still a few hurdles left for him to clear before the Angels can activate him from the injured list.

  • Schanuel (intercostal) was spotted taking part in agility work on the field prior to Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Though Schanuel hasn't yet been cleared for full baseball activities since landing on the injured list Saturday due to a right intercostal strain, his presence on the field suggests that he hasn't been shut down entirely. A clearer timeline for Schanuel's return should come into focus once he's resumed taking part in batting practice, baserunning and fielding drills. Vaughn Grissom will likely continue to see the bulk of the reps at first base while Schnauel is out.

  • The Angels placed Schanuel on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 21, due to a right intercostal muscle strain Saturday.

Schanuel existed Thursday's game against Houston due to side soreness and didn't play Friday. He's since been diagnosed with an intercostal muscle strain and will be sidelined for at least 10 days. The Angels recalled both Christian Moore and Gustavo Campero from Triple-A Salt Lake while also placing outfielder Wade Meckler on the 7-day concussion IL in a series of roster moves. With Schanuel sidelined, Vaughn Grissom is logging a second straight start at first base Saturday and could see steady work at that position for the time being.

  • Schanuel (side) isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against Texas, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Schanuel left Thursday's game early with a side injury, and the Angels will give him an extra day to recover while they match up against left-hander MacKenzie Gore. His absence will cause Vaughn Grissom to move over to first base, opening up second for Oswald Peraza.
