  • Garver has announced his retirement from professional baseball, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

The 35-year-old Garver slashed only .175/.302/.294 in 50 games for the Mariners this season, eventually getting released in August. He will finish his career with a .229/.325/.432 batting line and 110 home runs covering parts of 10 seasons.

  • The Yankees signed Garver to a minor-league contract Friday, Ted Schwerzler of minnesotasportsfan.com reports.

The Mariners released Garver earlier in the week, and he quickly found a new home after the Yankees failed to add any catching help at the trade deadline. Garver appeared in 50 games for Seattle this season but slashed a miserable .175/.302/.294 with four homers, 15 RBI, 17 runs scored, one stolen base and a 22:49 BB:K across 149 plate appearances. The 35-year-old will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • The Mariners released Garver on Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Garver has slashed just .175/.302/.294 in 50 games for the Mariners this season. If the 35-year-old wants to continue playing this season, he will likely have to accept a minor-league contract first.

  • Garver went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Garver provided some offense in what was largely a pitchers' duel, driving a two-run homer to left field off Trey Yesavage in the fourth inning. Since Cal Raleigh returned from the injured list June 16, Garver has seen limited playing time but drew the start behind the plate Sunday with Raleigh serving as the designated hitter. On the year, Garver is slashing .194/.325/.330 with four homers, 14 RBI and 16 runs scored across 123 plate appearances.

  • Garver will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Guardians.

The veteran split time behind the dish with Jhonny Pereda from mid-May through mid-June while Cal Raleigh was on the injured list, but Garver has now returned to a reserve role. Though he'll crack the lineup Sunday while Raleigh serves as the Mariners' designated hitter, Garver is unlikely to see more than a start or two per week in his role as the No. 2 catcher.

  • Garver is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Though he appeared likely to take over as the Mariners' clear No. 1 catcher when Cal Raleigh (oblique) was placed on the injured list earlier this month, Garver has instead been used in a timeshare behind the plate with Jhonny Pereda. Since Raleigh last played May 13, Garver has made seven starts to Pereda's nine.
