Boyd declined his side of a $15 million option for 2027 on Thursday and is now a free agent, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
The veteran left-hander will be given a $2 million buyout instead. The Cubs can still negotiate with Boyd for a few days before other teams are allowed to discuss a contract with him. Boyd -- who turns 36 in February -- logged a 3.91 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 96:39 K:BB across 126.2 regular-season innings in 2026.

Boyd took the loss in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Padres on Tuesday. He gave up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk over four innings.
The left-hander didn't have trouble finding the zone, with 42 of his 58 pitches going for strikes, but the Friars made plenty of hard contact with four extra-base hits, including three homers. The poor showing from Boyd was a departure from his recent form, as he surrendered just two earned runs across 12 frames in his final two starts of the regular season. The Cubs will need to salvage the next two games in San Diego for Boyd to get a chance at redeeming himself with another playoff start this season.

Boyd has been named the starting pitcher for Tuesday's Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Padres, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.
Boyd last pitched against Miami on Thursday, allowing him to line up for the start in Game 1 of the wild-card round. The southpaw pitched well in his last six outings of the regular season, posting a 3.28 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 25 strikeouts over 35.2 innings.

Boyd (10-5) picked up the win after allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings against the Marlins on Thursday. He struck out three.
In his final start of the campaign, Boyd tied his season high with seven innings pitched, which he previously accomplished four times this year. The southpaw allowed just one run on a Jakob Marsee RBI single in the third inning as he secured a second straight victory. The 35-year-old will end the year with a 3.91 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 96:39 K:BB over 126.2 innings.

Boyd (9-5) earned the win against the Reds on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings.
Boyd opened with four scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the fifth. The southpaw generated 11 swinging strikes and departed at only 71 pitches, his lowest total since he struggled in his very first outing of the campaign. He owns a 4.06 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 93:37 K:BB across 119.2 innings this year and will make his final start of the regular season at Boston next weekend.

Boyd (8-4) took the loss against Milwaukee on Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over seven-plus innings.
Boyd got through four scoreless frames before yielding a run in the fifth. The Cubs held a 2-1 lead going into the eighth, and manager Craig Counsell elected to keep Boyd on the mound. That move ended up backfiring, as the lefty hurler put the first two batters of the inning on base via a walk and a double. Boyd was subsequently pulled, but both runners came home to score following his departure, saddling him with the loss. Boyd has gone 0-3 over his past five starts, recording a 5.46 ERA over 29.2 innings during that span. He'll look to get back on the winning foot his next time out, which is lined up to be a home matchup against Pittsburgh.
