Latest news

  • The Giants transferred Chapman (abdomen) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.

The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Turner Hill. Chapman underwent season-ending hernia surgery earlier this week but should be ready to go for the start of spring training.

  • Chapman (abdomen) will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Chapman will go under the knife to address a hernia that he played through for most of the season. The timing of the procedure will cause him to miss the remainder of the year, so the 33-year-old will close the book on a disappointing 2026 campaign in which he slashed .235/.324/.368 with seven homers, 42 RBI and 35 runs scored across 352 plate appearances. Christian Koss figures to serve as San Francisco's primary third baseman the rest of the way.

  • Chapman (abdomen) is scheduled to be evaluated by a specialist next week, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

MRI imaging confirmed Monday that Chapman suffered a core muscle injury, and manager Tony Vitello said Tuesday that the veteran third baseman may require surgery, per delos Santos. A timeline for Chapman's return will likely emerge following his doctor's visit, but he could be lost for the season if he goes under the knife.

  • Chapman will undergo another MRI on Monday since his abdominal strain remains bothersome when running, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The 33-year-old isn't believed to have suffered a setback, but he can't quite get over the hump in his recovery. Though manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Chapman was expected to come off the injured list during this weekend's series in San Diego, the veteran third baseman will instead be out a bit longer. Christian Koss and Oslevis Basabe have been sharing time at third base lately, and waiver pickup Buddy Kennedy could also factor into the mix for reps at the position while Chapman remains shelved.

  • Chapman (abdomen) will not be activated during San Francisco's weekend series against the Padres, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Giants were optimistic that Chapman would return sometime this weekend, but the 33-year-old said Saturday that he is still feeling discomfort while running. He's set to be reevaluated Saturday, so an updated timeline for his return could be available in the near future. In the meantime, Christian Koss will continue to serve as San Francisco's primary third baseman.

  • Giants manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Chapman (abdomen) will be activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during this weekend's series versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The Giants begin a road trip with a four-game series in San Diego beginning Thursday. Chapman has not played any rehab games, but it appears he'll skip a rehab assignment despite being shelved for the past month. The veteran third baseman is sporting a disappointing .235/.324/.368 batting line with seven home runs in 84 contests for San Francisco this season.
