Latest news

  • Brash has been shut down from throwing for eight weeks after an MRI revealed more inflammation in his lat, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Brash had been ramping up toward a return, throwing bullpen sessions in late August, but this setback eliminates any hope for a return this season. The flamethrowing right-hander made 20 appearances out of the Seattle bullpen in between IL stints, posting a 0.54 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over 16.2 innings.

  • Brash (lat) threw a bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled to throw another one in Boston early next week, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Brash threw 15-to-20 pitches in his latest mound session as he continues his recovery from a right lat strain. The hard-throwing setup man has missed extended time with no indication that he has faced live hitters. Given that, a return Tuesday when rosters expand seems unlikely.

  • The Mariners transferred Brash (lat) to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Brash has been on the injured list since June 10 with a strained right lat, so while his move to the 60-day IL will create a 40-man roster spot for Carlos Vargas (lat), it won't affect Brash's return timeline. The 28-year-old righty began throwing off a mound last weekend and is trending toward returning to Seattle's bullpen sometime in early September.

  • Brash (lat) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.

Saturday will mark Brash's first time throwing off a mound since he landed on the injured list June 10 with a right lat strain. The Mariners still haven't set a timetable for the right-hander's return, though there is optimism within the organization that he'll rejoin the bullpen sometime in early September. A more definitive timeline will likely emerge after he gets through a few mound sessions.

  • Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Saturday that Brash (lat) is "looming" closer to throwing a bullpen session, MLB.com reports.

On the shelf since June 10 due to a Grade 1 right lat strain, Brash was able to begin a throwing progression a few weeks ago and has thus far been limited to playing catch. Brash has been gradually increasing the distance of his throwing without any apparent issues, so he looks poised to take the next step in his recovery program by getting back on a mound. Brash appears to be trending toward a late-August return from the 15-day injured list.

RotoWire via ESPN · Aug 9

  • General manager Justin Hollander said Tuesday that Brash was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain in his right lat, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.

Brash has suffered multiple right lat strains this season, though Hollander noted that his latest injury is in a different spot than the one that kept him out for three weeks in May. He also said that the 28-year-old righty is facing a longer stint on the IL this time around and is likely to return sometime around late July or early August. Until then, Jose Ferrer, Gabe Speier and Eduard Bazardo figure to work more often in high-leverage situations.
