  • Severino (shoulder) logged a bullpen session Saturday and is expected to have a normal offseason, per MLB.com.

Severino hit the injured list May 30 due to a right shoulder strain that will ultimately keep him out of action for the remainder of the season. While the right-hander won't return to a big-league mound in 2026, he seems to be progressing well in rehab and reportedly "looked good" in Saturday's session. Severino could opt out of his contract and turn down his $22 million player option for 2027 to hit the open market, but after an injury-marred campaign, he's likely to return to the Athletics. Before hitting the shelf, the 32-year-old posted a 2-6 record with a 4.16 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB across 62.2 innings (12 starts).

  • Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said he does not expect Severino (shoulder) to return to a big-league mound this season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Severino, who has been on the injured list since May 30, is not expected to toe the slab again in 2026, as Kotsay believes there is not enough time left in the season based on Severino's progression during his current throwing program. The right-hander's final stats for the season include a 2-6 record with a 4.16 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB across 62.2 innings. Severino will enter the final year of his three-year, $67 million contract with the A's in 2027.

  • Severino (shoulder) began a throwing progression Saturday, per MLB.com.

Severino has been on the shelf since May 30 due to a right shoulder strain and was shifted to the 60-day injured list June 21. Beginning to throw is a positive step, though he likely has several more boxes to check before embarking on a rehab assignment and ultimately rejoining the big-league rotation. The veteran right-hander posted a 2-6 record with a 4.16 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB across 62.2 innings (12 starts) before this lengthy absence.

  • Severino's (shoulder) recent MRI showed signs of healing, but manager Mark Kotsay indicated Saturday that the right-hander is several weeks away from a potential return to the rotation, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.

Severino has yet to start a throwing program after he was lifted from his May 29 start with a right shoulder strain. "The hope is that the start of the throwing progression goes well and we can continue that, and hopefully build him up before it's too late to have a season for him," Kotsay said Saturday. The Athletics have, by far, the worst team ERA in the majors (6.85) since Severino went down with his injury. Once he's cleared to throw, he's expected to require several rehab starts before rejoining the rotation.

  • The Athletics transferred Severino (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.

The right-hander landed on the injured list in late May due to a shoulder strain and was scheduled to be evaluated in 4-to-6 weeks, so he already seemed likely to spend more than 60 days on the shelf. Now three weeks into his recovery, Severino could be re-evaluated within the next week or two, at which point a target date for his return could begin to come into focus.

  • The Athletics announced Tuesday that Severino has been diagnosed with a strain of his right shoulder capsule and subscapularis muscle and will be re-evaluated in 4-to-6 weeks, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Severino sustained the injury during his most recent start Friday against the Yankees and was placed on the 15-day injured list a day later. The right-hander underwent an MRI on Monday that confirmed the severity of the shoulder strain, which he'll treat with a platelet-rich plasma injection Thursday. Severino will wait for the shot to take effect before he begins the rehab process, and since he's not expected to start ramping up his throwing until he gets re-evaluated at the beginning of July, the 32-year-old would appear unlikely to return from the IL before the All-Star break.
