Medina picked up a hold by throwing a perfect inning with two strikeouts in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.
Medina worked a scoreless seventh inning, retiring the side in order to pick up his 12th hold of the season. Since Aug. 1, the right-hander has posted a 3-0 record with a 1.62 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 25:9 K:BB and six holds over 16.2 innings. Overall, Medina has made 52 appearances with a 3.39 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 84:35 K:BB across 66.1 innings in 2026.

Medina struck out two batters and allowed one hit and one walk over a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Yankees.
The Athletics called upon Medina to work as an opener last Sunday but he's since shifted back to the bullpen and is likely to stick in a middle-relief role, even with Luis Severino (shoulder) landing on the injured list Saturday. For the season, Medina has collected one win and two holds while pitching to a 3.13 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB in 23 innings over 17 appearances.

Medina will serve as the Athletics' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Medina worked primarily as a starter over his first two MLB seasons, but he has pitched exclusively in relief so far in 2026, posting a 2.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings. He has maxed out at 2.2 innings in an appearance this season, so while he could eventually get stretched back out as a true starter, the right-hander will likely operate as more of an opener in San Diego. Sunday had been Jacob Lopez's turn in the rotation, so he seems likely to handle the bulk of the innings behind Medina.

Entering for Jeffrey Springs (hip) in the fourth inning, Medina allowed some traffic but ultimately earned the win. After primarily operating as a starter across 149.2 regular-season innings in 2023 and 2024, the right-hander has worked exclusively out of the bullpen in 2026 after missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Medina could merit consideration for a spot in the rotation later on in the season, but at least to begin the campaign, he'll likely operate as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. Deploying Medina in relief should allow the Athletics to better manage the right-hander's workload over the course of the campaign, after he missed all of 2025 while completing his recovery from his Aug. 6, 2024 Tommy John surgery. Medina faced no restrictions during spring training but showed shaky command in the Cactus League, allowing six earned runs on six hits while posting a 5:9 K:BB in 7.1 innings.
