  • Higashioka's mutual option for 2027 wasn't exercised Friday, making him a free agent, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

    It's unclear which side opted to move on, though it's likely that the Rangers passed on paying Higashioka $7 million after he slashed .218/.306/.370 across 186 plate appearances in the majors this year. The 36-year-old backstop will instead receive a $1 million buyout and attempt to land a new deal on the open market, though he is likely to be limited to a bench role at this stage in his career.

    Higashioka began a rehab assignment with the Express, and per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com, the Rangers plan to have him hit only for the time being. When/if he returns to the team, Higashioka will serve as a bench bat.

  • The Rangers announced Wednesday that Higashioka (forearm) began throwing out to 60 feet, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

    After being placed on the 10-day injured list July 21 due to a right flexor strain, Higashioka was shut down from throwing for nearly three weeks before being cleared to start ramping back up when Aug. 11 imaging on his forearm revealed improved healing. Assuming his initial throwing went well, Higashioka could start throwing to bases at some point this week. The veteran backstop will need to complete a rehab assignment prior to being activated and is likely at least a couple weeks away from rejoining the Rangers.

  • The Rangers placed Higashioka on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right flexor strain, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.

    Higashioka has posted an .813 OPS in 30 trips to the plate since the beginning of July, but his injury will keep him on the sidelines until at least the end of the month. Austin Wynns was selected to the active roster to replenish Texas' catcher depth.
