  • The Padres exercised Hart's $2.5 million club option for 2027 on Sunday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Hart spent the final days of the regular season in the minors and didn't rejoin the active roster for the playoffs, but he was up with the Padres for much of the year and had a 4.92 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 59:26 K:BB across 64 innings. The left-hander started in just four of his 46 appearances and is likely to continue seeing most of his action out of the bullpen in 2027.

  • The Padres optioned Hart to the Arizona Complex League on Saturday.

Hart will be pushed off the Padres' active roster in order to make room for Gavin Sheets (foot), who returned from the injured list Saturday. The 33-year-old southpaw will finish the season with a 4.92 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 64 innings with San Diego.

  • Hart did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing a hit and no walks over three scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out two.

Tabbed as Sunday's opener after Michael King's start was pushed to Monday, Hart completed a season-high three scoreless innings. The lanky left-hander hasn't allowed a run over his past five outings spanning 9.2 innings, surrendering just five hits while posting a 10:2 K:BB during that stretch. Overall, Hart owns a 4.53 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB across 43.2 innings (29 appearances).

  • Hart will start Sunday's game against the Giants.

Hart hasn't pitched since serving as an opener Wednesday versus Colorado, and he'll fill the role again for Sunday's series finale versus San Francisco. He covered a season-high 2.2 innings during that outing and has lasted as least two frames in 13 of his 28 appearances, so a similar workload seems likely this time around. Michael King's start was pushed to Monday after he was previously penciled in to pitch Sunday.

  • Hart will serve as the Padres' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Hart opened ahead of bulk reliever Griffin Canning in a game last week in Atlanta, and it's expected to be the same setup for Wednesday's contest. The lefty has posted a 5.21 ERA and 33:12 K:BB across 38 innings for the Padres this season.

  • Hart will serve as the Padres' opening pitcher for Thursday's game in Atlanta.

Hart -- who has an ugly 10.80 ERA in six appearances this month -- will handle the first inning or two for the Padres before turning things over to Griffin Canning. The lefty has had one other opener assignment this season, giving up one run in two frames on June 27 versus the Dodgers.
