  • Yates announced his retirement from Major League Baseball following Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers.

Yates wrapped up his 12-year MLB career with 1.2 scoreless innings as the opener Saturday, allowing two hits while striking out one batter. He made 46 appearances this season between the Angels and Pirates, posting a 3.19 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 49:17 K:BB over 42.1 innings. The right-hander also tallied three saves to bring his career total to 101, with 41 of those saves coming in 2019 when he led the majors in the category.

  • The Pirates activated Yates (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

Yates has not pitched at all in September due to a right shoulder impingment. He did not go out on a rehab assignment, as the Pirates were satisfied with the work Yates did on the side to show he was ready for reinstatement. The veteran reliever posted a 2.19 ERA and 11:5 K:BB over 12.1 innings in August after the Pirates acquired him at the trade deadline.

  • The Pirates placed Yates on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder impingement.

Yates hasn't pitched since Saturday, so it could be an injury that's nagged at him for a while. The veteran reliever will be eligible for activation Sept. 15, though it's unclear at this point if he will be ready to go on that date. Khristian Curtis is grabbing Yates' roster spot.

  • The Pirates acquired Yates from the Angels on Monday in exchange for right-hander Kyle Robinson, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Yates has logged a 3.95 ERA and 36:12 K:BB over 27.1 innings for the Halos this season. The 39-year-old will likely slot into a setup role as part of a retooled Pittsburgh bullpen. Yates will become a free agent after the season.

  • Yates (0-5) was tagged with the loss and a blown save in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Tigers. He allowed two runs on a hit and a walk across two-thirds of an inning while also hitting a batter.

Yates entered the game in the top of the ninth looking for his fourth save of the season, but instead he got tagged with his third blown save and fifth loss. He had recorded two outs and had runners on first and second when Hao-Yu Lee unleashed a two-run double that ended up giving Detroit the victory. Yates has made five appearances in July but owns a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across four innings.

  • Yates gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 4-3 win over the Twins.

Yates has continued to show improvement on the mound recently, allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out 15 batters across his last 10.2 innings. He's now recorded two of his team's last three saves.
