  • Steele (elbow) is not on the Cubs' roster for their wild-card series versus the Padres, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Steele has been out all season while recovering from UCL revision surgery and a flexor strain. He is physically ready to pitch now, having made four rehab appearances this month, but the Cubs have decided he's not a fit for their playoff roster. Steele could earn consideration in subsequent rounds, if his team advances.

  • Steele (elbow) threw a bullpen session off the mound at Petco Park on Monday, John Fanta of NBC Sports reports.

It remains to be seen if Steele, who has spent the season recovering from UCL revision surgery and a flexor strain, will be added to the roster for Chicago's NL Wild Card Series against the Padres. If he is added to the roster prior to Tuesday's Game 1, he would presumably be deployed out of the bullpen.

  • Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that the team doesn't plan to activate Steele (elbow) from the 60-day injured list this weekend, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.

Steele began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa earlier this month and has allowed six runs (four earned) with an 11:1 K:BB over 7.2 innings covering four appearances. The left-hander is available to pitch for the Cubs, if needed, but the team has decided there's currently not room for him on the active roster. Steele has been sidelined all season, first as he continued his recovery from UCL revision surgery and later due to a flexor strain.

  • Steele will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Steele has managed to successfully toss several bullpen sessions, proving that he's ready to progress to facing live hitters. He'll presumably need to make at least a few appearances in the minors before being activated from the 60-day injured list, at which point he would likely provide support for the Cubs out of the bullpen considering he won't have enough time to build back up to a starter's workload.

  • Steele (elbow) is hoping to start a rehab assignment after throwing two more live bullpen sessions, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Steele has been gradually increasing the frequency and intensity of his throwing sessions since he was cleared to start playing catch earlier this month. He's scheduled for two more live batting practice sessions, after which he'll be re-evaluated before potentially sent out on a rehab appearance. Steele hasn't pitched since April 7, 2025 after undergoing UCL revision surgery on his left elbow one month later.

  • Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Steele (elbow) is close to being cleared to face hitters, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Steele had UCL revision surgery last May and was nearing a rehab assignment when he suffered a flexor strain in late April. He resumed throwing off the mound Aug. 1 and is nearly ready to face hitters, presumably in a live batting practice session. Steele won't have enough time to ramp up for a starter's workload, but he has a chance to help the Cubs as a reliever in September.
