The Guardians claimed Tena off waivers from the Nationals on Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Tena was dealt from Cleveland to Washington at the 2024 trade deadline, and he's now returned to his original organization. The 25-year-old infielder slashed only .222/.302/.370 with seven home runs over 114 contests with the Nationals in 2026. Tena does not have minor-league options remaining, so the Guardians are unable to send him to the minors without passing him through waivers first.

The Nationals designated Tena for assignment Monday.
Tena spent the entire 2026 campaign in the majors, but he slashed only.222/.302/.370 with seven home runs over 114 contests. The 25-year-old can play virtually all over the field, but a lack of minor-league options could hurt his appeal on waivers.

Tena went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's win over the Rangers.
Tena kicked off the scoring with a solo shot to straightaway center field in the third inning off righty Kumar Rocker. Tena sees most of his action as a designated hitter but got his second start of the season in left field Wednesday. The 25-year-old is slashing .233/.304/.393 with seven homers and 20 RBI in 206 at-bats this year against righties, against whom he gets most of his opportunities.

Tena is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.
Tena has been included in the lineup just once in the Nationals' last six games, missing out on two starts against right-handed pitching during that span. Rather than calling upon Tena to hold down the strong side of a platoon at designated hitter, the Nationals may be content to rotate players at that spot to open up more at-bats for the likes of Brady House and Andres Chaparro.

Tena is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cubs.
The left-handed-hitting Tena typically plays against most right-handers, but he'll take a seat Thursday versus righty Kevin Gausman, who has reverse splits. Andres Chaparro will occupy the designated hitter slot for the Nationals.

Tena is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
The Nationals will keep the left-handed-hitting Tena on the bench for the second day in a row while the Cubs send another lefty (David Peterson) to the hill. Daylen Lile will spell Ortiz at designated hitter and will bat eighth.
