Montgomery earned the save in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Mets, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
With Jacob Latz unavailable after throwing 1.2 innings Wednesday, it was Montgomery who was called upon to close out the game Thursday. The veteran southpaw was sharp, retiring the side on just eight pitches as he logged his first save of the season and just the second of his major-league career. Since returning from the IL in August, Montgomery's posted a 4.63 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 23.1 innings.

Starter Cal Quantrill exited after four outs with lat tightness, necessitating another heavy lift from the Rangers' bullpen, which covered 4.2 innings a day earlier. Montgomery's effort extended his scoreless streak to 7.2 innings. After a couple of rough outings upon the left-hander's activation from the injured list in early August, he sports a 1.72 ERA and 0.57 WHIP over his last 15.2 relief innings. His ability to provide length may come in handy over the final week of the regular season as Texas tries to secure the AL West crown.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday that Montgomery is considered as a possible replacement for Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) in the rotation, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Montgomery returned from the 60-day injured list last week and tossed four innings and 79 pitches in relief Sunday against the Orioles in his Rangers debut. At the time Montgomery was activated, manager Skip Schumaker said the left-hander would be used out of the bullpen, but circumstances have changed with Eovaldi landing on the shelf Monday. Cal Quantrill is another option to replace Eovaldi.

Montgomery was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday after fully recovering from March 2025 UCL surgery. He'll work out of the bullpen in his return, and his first time on the mound with the Rangers will mark his first major-league appearance since September of 2024. During that 2024 regular season with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery posted an 8-7 record across 25 games (21 starts) with a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 83:44 K:BB over 117 frames.

Montgomery hasn't pitched in the big leagues in nearly 23 months after undergoing UCL surgery in March of 2025. The left-hander worked as a starter on his rehab assignment, but it's unclear what the Rangers' plans are with Montgomery. He could work in long relief, at least initially. Across eight rehab starts, Montgomery logged a 3.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB spanning 24 innings.

Montgomery is sufficiently stretched out after getting his pitch count up to 75 in his last rehab outing, but the Rangers will have the lefty make one more rehab start to iron out the kinks. Working his way back from March 2025 UCL surgery, Montgomery has turned in a 4.74 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB in 19 innings across seven rehab starts thus far.
