Latest news

  • Cantillo (11-9) notched the win Thursday against Boston, striking out four while allowing one hit and two walks in five shutout innings of relief.

Cantillo was dominant in bulk relief Thursday, scattering a lone hit in a scoreless outing to help Cleveland clinch a third consecutive postseason berth. The left-hander is steamrolling his way into the playoffs, riding a scoreless streak of 15 innings covering his last three appearances in long relief. His regular season reaches an end with a 3.62 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 171:81 K:BB across 159 frames.

  • Cantillo is slated to pitch in bulk relief behind opener Daniel Espino in Thursday's game at Boston, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

For a third straight appearance, Cantillo will work in relief of Espino, who is likely to be limited to 1-to-2 innings. Cantillo has looked sharp out of the bullpen, posting a 13:2 K:BB while giving up just three hits over 10 shutout frames.

  • Cantillo (10-9) earned the win against the Athletics on Friday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings.

Daniel Espino served as Cleveland's opener Friday, though he gave up a three-run home run to Zack Gelof in the first inning. Cantillo was brought out for the second frame, and the 26-year-old southpaw proceeded to keep the Athletics off the board over the next six innings while limiting the A's to only three baserunners. He's tossed two consecutive scoreless outings, and overall Cantillo has a 3.74 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 167:79 K:BB across 154 innings this season. He figures to make his next appearance -- as a starter or otherwise -- next week against the Red Sox at Fenway Park in his final outing of the regular season.

  • Cantillo is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind opener Daniel Espino in Friday's game against the Athletics, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

The Guardians will go back to the well with the Espino/Cantillo pairing for a second straight turn through the rotation after the duo combined for 10 punchouts over six scoreless frames in a 4-3 loss to the Twins last Saturday. Though Cantillo hasn't notched a victory in any of his last six appearances (five starts), being deployed in bulk relief should nonetheless increase his chances of qualifying for a win more than if he was used as a traditional starter.

  • Cantillo did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Twins, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over four scoreless innings.

Cantillo entered in the third inning and dominated, throwing 37 of 56 pitches for strikes with 10 whiffs. It marked the first time the 26-year-old pitched in relief all year, and it was also his first scoreless outing since another four-inning effort July 29. He owns a 3.89 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 162:78 K:BB across 148 frames this season and lines up for a home matchup with the Athletics next weekend, should he return to the rotation.

  • Cantillo could be a candidate to pitch in bulk relief behind opener Daniel Espino in Saturday's game against the Twins,

Saturday would have been Gavin Williams' turn in the rotation, but the Guardians elected to push their ace back two days in the schedule so that he can pitch the series opener versus the division-leading White Sox. Espino will get the starting nod in Williams' stead, though he's expected to be limited to 1-to-2 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. After most recently getting roughed up for four runs on three hits and five walks in just 2.1 innings in Monday's loss in Baltimore, Cantillo will be available on four days' rest and could pitch in relief for the first time all season. The Guardians also have Slade Cecconi on hand as another option to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen.
