  • The Rays recalled Scholtens from Triple-A Durham on Sunday.

After spending the past five-plus weeks in the minors, Scholtens will return for the final day of the regular season, replacing Ty Johnson in the Rays' bullpen. Scholtens has been serviceable in 11 appearances (two starts) with Tampa Bay this season, posting a 4.03 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB in 44.2 innings, though he doesn't figure to be part of the playoff roster.

  • The Rays optioned Scholtens to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Scholtens allowed two runs over a four-inning relief outing in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays. Since he would have been unavailable to pitch for a few days, the Rays are replacing Scholtens on the roster with a fresh reliever in Chris Roycroft.

  • Scholtens allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two across three innings during the Rays' 6-5 loss to the Orioles on Friday.

Steven Matz served as the Rays' opener Friday and recorded the first three outs before handing the keys to Scholtens. Scholtens proceeded to give up a run in both the second and third innings, the latter of which came on a Colton Cowser solo homer. It was Scholtens' first major-league appearance since May 25, after he spent two months on the injured list due to a right wrist strain before being optioned to Triple-A Durham in late July. It's unclear whether he'll stick around the majors past Friday's outing, given that Shane McClanahan (back) is nearing a return from the 15-day IL.

  • The Rays recalled Scholtens from Triple-A Durham on Thursday.

Scholtens owns a 3.82 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 37.2 frames in the majors this year but has fired 10.2 consecutive shutout innings at Triple-A. He'll return to the big leagues presumably to make a spot start during the Rays' upcoming series against Baltimore. Michael Grove was optioned to Durham in a corresponding move.

  • The Rays activated Scholtens (wrist) from the 15-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

Scholtens is recovered from a right wrist strain that's shelved him since late May, but he will remain at Durham where he had been on a rehab assignment. The righty has logged a 3.82 ERA and 30:11 K:BB over 37.2 innings covering two starts and seven relief outings with the Rays this season.

  • Scholtens (wrist) struck out a batter and allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk across three innings Saturday in a rehab start with Triple-A Durham.

Scholtens moved his rehab assignment to the Rays' top affiliate after he had previously covered 6.1 innings while producing an 8:3 K:BB between two starts in the rookie-level Florida Complex League earlier in the month. The right-hander built up to 66 pitches Sunday, so he may need only one more appearance in the minors before he's stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload. The Rays wouldn't appear to have room for Scholtens in their rotation at the moment, so it's more likely that he serves as a multi-inning reliever once he's activated from the 15-day injured list.
