  • McCann went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 10-7 loss to the Padres.

    McCann has hit three homers over eight games in September. The catcher is batting just .217 (5-for-23) in that span. He's mostly been limited to a reserve role down the stretch. On the season, McCann is batting .283 with a .774 OPS, seven homers, 28 RBI, 17 runs scored and six doubles over 162 plate appearances.

  • McCann went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Philadelphia.

    McCann, who had struck out twice against Phillies starter Andrew Painter, homered on the first pitch of the eighth inning off reliever Jonathan Bowlan. He reached low for a sweeper down in the zone for his fifth home run of the season. As the backup catcher, McCann gets a couple of starts per week, but as the Diamondbacks battle for a postseason berth, manager Torey Lovullo may be tempted to get starting catcher Gabriel Moreno's bat in the lineup as much as possible. That could result in Moreno slotting in at DH and McCann working behind the dish.

    McCann has yet to be held hitless since he was activated from a stint on the injured list due to a quadriceps strain. The catcher extended his hitting streak with a seventh-inning homer. Over nine games since his return, he's gone 18-for-35 (.514) with four homers and 15 RBI. McCann is batting .319 with an .840 OPS, four long balls, 21 RBI, 11 runs scored and five doubles over 99 plate appearances. He'll likely get a short-term bump in playing time while Gabriel Moreno is on the paternity list, though McCann's hot hitting of late could open the door for a few at-bats as the designated hitter as well.

    McCann saved Arizona from its worst loss of the season when he singled home the game-winning run in the top of the 12th inning. The Diamondbacks blew a 6-0 lead in the final two innings of regulation but came back to win it in extras. McCann has hit safely in all six games since returning from a quad injury that cost him nearly two months. The backup catcher is 12-for-24 (.500) with three home runs and 10 RBI in those six contests.
