  • Leiter (ankle/biceps) threw a bullpen session at Globe Life Field on Sunday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Leiter had been shut down for a couple of weeks after experiencing biceps soreness in his return from June ankle surgery. The right-hander felt good with the session and may throw another bullpen this week before the Rangers make a decision on his next step.

  • Leiter (ankle/biceps) has begun playing catch again and is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend, MLB.com reports.

Leiter is aiming to rejoin the Rangers during the final week of the regular season as the team pushes for a spot in the postseason. The right-hander, who initially landed on the injured list in June after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle, experienced soreness in his right biceps during a rehab assignment earlier this month.

  • Leiter (ankle/biceps) is heading to Arizona to resume his rehab, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Leiter experienced biceps soreness during a recent outing, which prompted to the Rangers to put a halt to the rehab assignment. After being shut down for a few days, the right-hander is headed to the team's spring training facility to resume throwing.

  • Leiter (ankle) reported biceps soreness after the first inning of his latest rehab outing at Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday, Zach Sweet of MLB.com reports.

The Rangers will shut Leiter down from throwing for a few days before reevaluating him. Manager Skip Schumaker said Friday that Leiter's setback will make it harder for him to return this season as a starter, but he may still be able to contribute out of the bullpen if he's able to get fully healthy.

  • The Rangers are considering using Leiter (ankle) in a relief role once he returns from the 60-day injured list, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

While manager Skip Schumaker hasn't made a final decision on how Leiter will be deployed upon his return, the right-hander ended up being used out of the bullpen for his third rehab appearance Wednesday with Triple-A Round Rock. After making starts of 2.2 innings and three innings in his first two minor-league appearances, Leiter was rocked for three earned runs on three hits while also hitting a batter during his one-inning relief outing Wednesday. Though the Rangers haven't given up on using Leiter as a starter for the long term, he had struggled to a 5.29 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in his 15 turns through the big-league rotation this season before undergoing arthroscopic surgery June 23 to remove a loose body in his right ankle area.

  • Leiter (ankle) will make the third appearance of his rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Round Rock.

Through his first two rehab starts -- one with Round Rock, one with Double-A Frisco -- Leiter has posted an 8:3 K:BB over 5.2 innings while yielding five runs (four earned) and four hits. He tossed 59 pitches in his most recent outing with Frisco and will look to build on that workload Wednesday before potentially making his return from the 60-day injured list. Leiter has been on the shelf since June 21 after undergoing arthroscopic surgery two days later to address a loose body near his right ankle region.
