  • The Pirates recalled Barco from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Barco has given up 15 earned runs in just 17.2 major-league innings this season, but he'll return to the Pirates' bullpen nonetheless to help the team get through its final two regular-season contests. Wilber Dotel was optioned to Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

  • The Pirates optioned Barco to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Barco's stay in Pittsburgh lasted just one day, with the southpaw being called upon out of the bullpen to piggyback starter Lake Bachar in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Red Sox. After Bachar opened the game with three scoreless frames, Barco came on to work the next three innings, striking out four batters while yielding three earned runs on two hits and one walk. Barco will give up his spot on the active roster and in the bullpen to right-hander Yohan Ramirez (personal), who was reinstated from the paternity leave list in a corresponding move.

  • The Pirates recalled Barco from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.

Barco will be up with the Pirates for the fourth time this season and owns a 7.36 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 14.2 innings over six appearances with the big club. The left-hander most recently tossed a six-inning shutout for Indianapolis last weekend and could be called upon to cover multiple innings of relief during Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Lake Bachar will be making a spot start Sunday, but he's expected to be in line for a restricted workload after making his first four appearances with Pittsburgh as a reliever.

  • The Pirates optioned Barco to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Jason Mackey of MLB.com reports.

Barco gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in three innings as a bulk reliever Thursday versus the Reds. He was not going to be available to pitch for at least a day or two, so the Pirates will replace him in the bullpen with a fresh arm.

  • Barco took a no-decision Thursday against the Reds, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in three relief innings. He struck out two.

Working in long relief behind opener Yohan Ramirez, Barco was mostly ineffective in a laborious outing Thursday. The southpaw landed only 42 of his 72 pitches for strikes, walking multiple batters in his fourth consecutive major-league appearance while failing to work at least five frames in any of them. Through 14.2 innings, Barco has a disastrous 7.36 ERA, 2.11 WHP and 10:12 K:BB and might soon be headed back to Triple-A Indianapolis following his first big-league showing since April 28.

  • Barco could be used as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Yohan Ramirez in Thursday's game in Cincinnati, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.

The Pirates recalled Barco from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, but he went unused in relief during the team's 3-0 loss to the Diamondbacks. With Ramirez likely to be limited to one or two innings Thursday in his first big-league start, Barco will be the freshest arm in the Pittsburgh bullpen and is one of the few options who's capable of covering multiple frames. Barco has handled a swingman role at Triple-A for most of the season, posting a 4.87 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 49:23 K:BB in 44.1 innings.
