  • Soto struck out two in a clean ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Cardinals.

After allowing a leadoff walk, Soto retired the Cardinals in order en route to his 16th save of the season. The 31-year-old punched out JJ Wetherholt and Ivan Herrera. Soto has now recorded three consecutive scoreless outings after back-to-back rocky appearances against divisional opponents. This year, the southpaw owns a 6-5 record, 3.72 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 78:29 K:BB over 65.1 innings.

  • Soto gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his 15th save of the season in an 8-5 win over the Royals.

Mason Montgomery threw 29 pitches Thursday, so Soto got his old job back for a night as he picked up his first save since Aug. 1. Soto remains prone to meltdowns, and while he's blanked the opposition in five of his seven September appearances, he still has a 10.13 ERA in 5.1 innings on the month. On the season, the veteran southpaw has a 3.78 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 76:28 K:BB through 64.1 frames with six wins and 13 holds in addition to his saves.

  • Soto allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out three across one inning Thursday against the Brewers.

Soto made his second appearance since the trade deadline and entered in the sixth inning on each occasion. He managed to turn in a scoreless inning Monday, but he allowed a double and a single to the first two batters he faced Thursday to surrender an earned run. Soto has turned things around lately by allowing only two earned runs across his last 10.2 innings, but his usage in Pittsburgh's revamped bullpen suggests he's no longer in the mix for saves.

  • Soto secured the save Saturday against the Reds, throwing a clean ninth inning. He struck out one.

Soto made quick work of the Reds, firing nine of his 11 pitches for strikes. The Pirates acquired Camilo Doval from the Yankees on Saturday to bolster the back end of their bullpen, and 29-year-old possesses closing experience that offers Pittsburgh another option among its high-leverage options. Soto has been shaky as the club's primary closer this season, posting a 3.69 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB with 14 saves in 19 attempts over 46.1 innings.

  • Soto (5-3) allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out one across two-thirds of an inning to take the loss Thursday against the Reds.

Soto entered the game in the ninth inning with the score tied at 2-2, but he allowed a leadoff double and struggled to find the zone consistently. Though he's had a very inconsistent season, he entered the game having turned in seven consecutive scoreless appearances, during which he earned two saves and posted a 7:2 K:BB. Mason Montgomery has started to factor into the saves picture in Pittsburgh, and this outing from Soto could crack that door open further for Montgomery.

  • Soto recorded his 13th save of the season in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Yankees, striking out one in a perfect 10th inning.

The southpaw did send the phantom runner to third base on a wild pitch as he looked to protect a 5-3 lead, but Soto left him stranded thanks to two popups and a strikeout of Cody Bellinger. Soto has been struggling over the summer, blowing three of nine save chances since the beginning of June, but he may be turning things around in July, getting scored upon just once in six appearances while posting a 1.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB over 6.2 innings.
