Latest news

  • Graceffo (8-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out one over one inning in Saturday's 8-5 extra-innings loss to the Nationals.

Graceffo entered the game in the 11th and quickly loaded the bases after allowing a single to Keibert Ruiz and walking Nasim Nunez. He never recovered and allowed four runs before escaping, and his offense couldn't respond in the bottom of the frame. This rough outing snapped a dominant stretch for Graceffo, who had gone 10 straight outings and 16.2 innings without allowing an earned run prior to Saturday.

  • Graceffo (8-1) earned the win after walking one and striking out one over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning Friday against the White Sox.

Graceffo entered the game with one out and a runner on first in the top of the fifth inning, and even though he loaded the bases, he escaped the jam unscathed without allowing a single run. The brief appearance earned Graceffo his eighth win of the season while lowering his ERA to 2.68. He's been excellent in recent weeks, as he hasn't given up a run in his last eight outings while posting a 0.83 WHIP and a 18:5 K:BB across 13.1 innings over that span.

  • Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol indicated Friday that Graceffo is under consideration to make a start during next week's series in San Francisco, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The qualifier is that the Cardinals will have to first get through a weekend series at Coors Field without needing to use Graceffo out of the bullpen, which is easier said than done. A midseason pitch mix change has unlocked Graceffo, who has logged a 2.22 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB over 28.1 innings since ditching his curveball for a new slider. He threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts while starting a bullpen game last week versus the Orioles, and the righty has since added an additional five scoreless frames with a 9:1 K:BB over two subsequent outings. Graceffo threw a season-high 48 pitches his last time out, so he should be capable of around 50-to-60 pitches next week if he does wind up making a spot start.

  • Graceffo will draw the start Thursday against the Orioles in what's expected to be a bullpen game for the Cardinals, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Graceffo is a former starting pitcher, but he's been a full-time reliever in 2026 and hasn't thrown more than 28 pitches in any of his last eight appearances. Once Graceffo exits the game after likely pitching the first inning or two, the Cardinals will lean on a collection of relievers as they aim to avoid a series sweep.

  • The Cardinals recalled Graceffo from Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Dani Wexelman of Cardinals.tv reports.

Graceffo was just optioned to Memphis last Friday and did not make an appearance during his brief stint with the team's top minor-league affiliate. The righty will provide a fresh bullpen arm as the Cardinals open up a five-game series against the rival Brewers on Monday.

  • The Cardinals optioned Graceffo to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

Graceffo has managed a 3.35 ERA and 1.12 WHIP out of the St. Louis bullpen this season but an 18:19 K:BB over 40.1 innings suggests rocky days could be ahead. He's being sent out in order to make space on the roster for the return of Ryne Stanek from paternity leave.
