  • The Twins signed Marquez to a minor-league contract Thursday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Marquez was released by the Padres over the weekend after collecting a 5.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:24 K:BB over 53 innings covering 10 starts and three relief outings. The 31-year-old will provide the Twins with a depth rotation option at Triple-A St. Paul.

  • The Padres designated Marquez for assignment Wednesday.

Marquez will lose his spot on the roster with the Padres needing to clear a spot for left-hander Robbie Ray, who was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Monday. The 31-year-old right-hander's time in San Diego ended on a down note, as he gave up four earned runs in an inning of relief in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks. Marquez made 13 appearances (10 starts) during his time with San Diego, pitching to a 5.26 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 53 innings.

  • Marquez allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two over five shutout innings in relief, earning the save in Friday's 7-0 win over the Giants.

The Padres used Bradgley Rodriguez and Yuki Matsui over the first four innings before Marquez came on for a lengthy relief appearance. Marquez threw 43 of 70 pitches for strikes en route to the first save of his major-league career. The workload suggests he can handle a starting role if the Padres return to using him in that capacity -- he had allowed six runs over 9.1 innings across his previous three starts. Marquez has posted a 4.67 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 36:23 K:BB through 52 innings over 12 games (10 starts) this season.

  • Marquez is likely to work multiple innings in relief behind opener Bradgley Rodriguez in Friday's game against the Giants, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan San Diego reports.

Rodriguez has covered exactly one inning in each of his previous three starts this season, so he'll likely be in line to work the opening frame again Friday before the Padres turn the game over to the bullpen. Marquez will be available on six days' rest and should be capable of providing some length after starting each of his last four appearances. He went 1-0 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB in 14.1 innings during that stretch.

  • Marquez did not factor into the decision in Friday's 4-2 win over Miami, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over just 2.1 innings.

Marquez left the game after just 37 pitches with one out into the third inning and the Padres trailing 1-0. The 31-year-old allowed just one run courtesy of a solo homer by Joe Mack in the second. On the season, Marquez now possesses a 5.17 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 34:22 K:BB in 47 innings.

  • Marquez did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 19-2 win over the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts over three innings.

Marquez was staked an early lead but departed at just 59 pitches after loading the bases and failing to record an out in the fourth inning. The 31-year-old has yielded three or fewer earned runs in each of his four July outings (three starts), though he's completed five frames just once during that span. He owns a 5.24 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 30:22 K:BB across 44.2 innings this season and lines up to face the Marlins on the road next weekend.
