  • Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said Saturday that Klassen (back) is unlikely to return this season, Jack Janes of TheSportingTribune.com reports.

While Klassen's bullpen sessions have been going well, the Angels have no reason to rush him back at this stage. Klassen made four starts in August in his return to the big club, posting an encouraging 2.01 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 22.1 innings. He should compete for a spot in the starting rotation in spring training, health permitting.

  • The Angels placed Klassen on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left low back inflammation.

The 24-year-old rookie sports a 2-2 record, 3.67 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 24:21 K:BB over 27 innings this season. The Halos recalled Mitch Farris from Triple-A Salt Lake to provide bullpen depth during Klassen's absence.

  • Klassen (2-2) took the loss against Cleveland on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings.

Klassen didn't have good control, as he threw only 54 of 90 pitches for strikes and walked three batters. Nonetheless, he kept the Angels in the game by holding the Guardians without an extra-base hit while falling two outs shy of a quality start. Klassen began his MLB career in poor fashion by giving up six earned runs over 4.2 frames across his first two appearances, but he's been much better since, yielding only five earned runs in his past four outings spanning 22.1 innings. That's brought his season ERA down to a respectable 3.67, but the right-hander still has a poor 1.63 WHIP and an ominous 24:21 K:BB across 27 innings overall. Klassen will almost certainly need to bring his walk rate down to experience prolonged MLB success, and he'll look to show growth in that area in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be a home matchup against the Yankees.

  • Klassen (2-1) allowed one hit and three walks while striking out seven over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Astros on Tuesday.

Klassen put together a strong and efficient performance, getting through the seven frames on 86 pitches (54 strikes). He's allowed just three runs across 17 innings over three starts since he entered the Angels' rotation earlier in August. On the year, he's at a 3.74 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 21:18 K:BB through 21.2 innings. He's still walking too many batters generally, which invites the risk of regression. Klassen will look to keep his strong performances rolling on the road versus the Rangers over the weekend, assuming he stays in the rotation over Ryan Johnson when Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) is activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Klassen (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out five over six innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Klassen has looked much sharper during his second stint in the majors, allowing just three runs over 10 innings across two starts, though he has an 8:5 K:BB in that span. The right-hander could have a chance to start regularly down the stretch if he can build off his first career quality start, though he'll have to compete with Ryan Johnson for the last spot in the rotation when Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) is activated. Klassen is at a 5.52 ERA, 2.11 WHIP and 14:15 K:BB through 14.2 innings across four starts, but his numbers are still skewed by his two poor outings in April. He's tentatively lined up for a road start in Houston next week.

  • Klassen is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Rangers at Angel Stadium.

After spending the past four months in the minors, Klassen was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake last week when the Angels had an opening in the rotation after dealing Jose Soriano to the Blue Jays prior to the trade deadline. Klassen made his third start of the season with the Angels on Friday in Miami, taking a no-decision while striking out three and allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks in four innings. Klassen may need a better showing during his upcoming turn through the rotation to ensure he receives additional starts with the Angels, who will soon get some reinforcement with Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) nearing a return from the 60-day injured list. Once Kikuchi is activated, the Angels will likely have only one rotation spot available for Klassen and Ryan Johnson.
