  • Workman was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Workman is the odd man out with the big-league club after the Padres signed Austin Hays to a major-league contract Sunday. Workman had been with the major-league roster since Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI in limited action over two contests. The 26-year-old has the ability to play all over the diamond, so he will be a top candidate to return to the Padres' roster if anyone goes down with an injury.

  • The Padres added Workman to the 26-man active roster ahead of Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Workman had been playing at Triple-A Toledo since the beginning of June, but he'll open his time in the Padres organization with the big club after he was acquired from the Tigers on Monday. The 26-year-old has seen time at second base, third base, shortstop and both corner-outfield spots between his stops in the majors and minors this season, so he'll offer the Padres some versatility off the bench.

  • San Diego acquired Workman and Casey Mize from Detroit for Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Workman finds a new home in San Diego after spending a majority of his season with Triple-A Toledo. Workman struggled in his brief time in the majors, recording just six hits in 38 plate appearances. The 26-year-old slashed .305/.366/.502 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 363 plate appearances with Toledo this season. Workman will most likely report to Triple-A El Paso.

  • The Tigers optioned Workman to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

Workman ended up being the roster casualty when Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Sunday. After being called up from Triple-A on May 10, Workman appeared in 16 games for Detroit but slashed just .158/.158/.553 with a 42.1 percent strikeout rate over 38 plate appearances.

  • Workman is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Angels.

Workman will hit the bench for the series finale with the Angels after he started both of the past two days, going 0-for-4 between those games to bring his average down to .167 on the season. With Workman taking a seat, the Tigers will make room in the starting nine at catcher for Jake Rogers while Dillon Dingler occupies the designated-hitter spot.

  • Workman is out of the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Orioles.

Since getting called up from Triple-A Toledo on May 10, Workman has provided five extra-base hits (two home runs, three doubles), but he's batting just .188 overall and has struck out in 16 of his 32 plate appearances. Even with Detroit still down three everyday players in Gleyber Torres (oblique), Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) and Javier Baez (ankle), Workman may have to settle for a part-time role if his contact woes continue.
