Latest news

  • Miller earned his fifth save of the season in Friday's 4-2 win over the Rays, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two in the ninth inning.

With Aroldis Chapman unavailable due to a lat issue, the Red Sox turned to Miller for the ninth inning to protect the team's 4-1 lead. It turned out to be a dramatic finish for Boston, with Miller tossing two wild pitches in the inning and loading the bases. Luckily for the southpaw, he limited the damage to just one run to secure the win for the Red Sox, who are inching closer toward punching their spot in the American League playoffs. Miller and Garrett Whitlock figure to be the top closer options for the Red Sox for as long as Chapman is sidelined.

  • Miller will draw the start for the Red Sox in a bullpen game against the Athletics on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

The left-hander will make his first start since 2024, when the Giants used him as an opener 10 times as a rookie that season. Miller was shipped from the Giants to the Red Sox at the trade deadline and has fired 2.1 scoreless frames in the first two appearances for his new team. He'll likely cover the first inning or two before turning the game over to the bullpen, with Brayan Bello being a candidate to work in bulk relief behind Miller.

  • Boston acquired Miller from the Giants on Monday in exchange for Marcelo Meyer, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Miller will make his way to Boston in the midst of the most dominant stretch of his career. Dating back to June 12, the 28-year-old has recorded 14 straight scoreless outings. In 38 appearances this season, the left-hander owns a 2.76 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB through 32.2 innings. With Aroldis Chapman already cemented as Boston's closer, Miller will likely transition into a high-leverage set-up role with his new team.

  • Miller notched a save against the Padres on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter with no walks over one scoreless inning.

Miller got the call for the ninth frame with San Francisco up three runs. He yielded a two-out single but then slammed the door shut by inducing a Xander Bogaerts flyout. Miller picked up his second save in the past four days after going without a save in each of his prior 24 appearances. The left-hander is on a 13-outing scoreless streak and has posted an 18:5 K:BB across 12.2 innings during that span, which may have earned him the Giants' top closer role. His primary competition, Caleb Kilian, pitched a scoreless seventh inning Thursday and recorded a hold, but he's surrendered five earned runs over 8.1 frames in July.

  • Miller picked up the save in Monday's 3-0 win over the Brewers. He struck out two over a perfect inning.

Miller had no trouble finishing off the Brewers in the ninth inning, retiring the side in order to secure the victory. Monday marked the southpaw's third save of the season and first since April 26. On the year, he owns a 2.87 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 44:22 K:BB across 31.1 innings. While save opportunities may be infrequent on the lowly Giants, Miller and Caleb Kilian appear to be manager Tony Vitello's top two options in the ninth inning.

  • Miller picked up a hold in Sunday's 8-5 win over the White Sox, striking out one in a scoreless inning.

Miller entered in the eighth inning and threw seven of his 11 pitches for strikes, earning his sixth hold on the campaign. The left-hander has recorded three straight scoreless outings since surrendering two runs in his return from a back strain May 16. He now owns a 3.77 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB across 14.1 innings in 16 games this season.
