Latest news

  • Alvarado allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his sixth save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Hogan Harris worked the eighth inning against the top of the Toronto order, leaving Alvarado to face the heart of the lineup in the ninth, and the right-hander got the job done on 16 pitches (10 strikes). That duo will likely continue to split closing duties the rest of the way based on matchups and availability, but it's encouraging that Alvarado wasn't yanked from high-leverage work again after getting tagged for a run in each of his last three outings, and walking a batter in his last four. Since the beginning of August, Alvarado sports a 2.40 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB in 15 innings with one win, four saves and four holds.

  • Alvarado allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one over a scoreless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Twins.

Alvarado has earned a save in three straight outings, including each of the past two days. Hogan Harris had looked to be pulling away with the closer job earlier in the month, and he'll likely remain in the mix for high-leverage work despite not being utilized Wednesday. However, Alvarado has the momentum, especially since he's given up just two runs over 11 innings in August. Alvarado is at a 4.09 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB through 44 innings this season, and he's added five saves, eight holds and one blown save.

  • Alvarado struck out a batter during a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Twins.

Alvarado was tasked with protecting a two-run advantage and needed just seven pitches to retire Minnesota in order, closing out the victory for his fourth save of the season. The right-hander has increasingly worked in high-leverage situations and has converted his two save chances since the beginning of August. Alvarado still owns a 4.19 ERA, but his growing presence in the late innings gives him considerably more fantasy relevance than he carried earlier in the campaign. He has allowed runs in just one of his 12 relief appearances this month.

  • Alvarado struck out two in a clean ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Astros.

It's worth noting that Hogan Harris, who has been the Athletics' top option for saves of late, worked a scoreless eighth inning for a hold Saturday. The A's have had a hard time settling on a steady ninth-inning arm in their beleaguered bullpen, and it wouldn't be surprising if they continue to mix and match their high-leverage options. Alvarado has a 4.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 51:19 K:BB over 42 innings, tallying eight holds and three saves in four opportunities.

  • Alvarado (3-3) allowed two runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Wednesday versus the Giants.

Alvarado gave up ninth-inning solo shots to Rafael Devers and Victor Bericoto. This was Alvarado's first blown save of the season, though he's also 11 days removed from his last converted save. He's allowed five runs over 5.1 innings in his last four appearances, including four homers. Overall, Alvarado has a 6.20 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 20.1 innings with two saves and four holds. If his struggles persist, he could pitch his way out of the high-leverage role he earned earlier in June.

  • Alvarado (3-1) earned the win in relief Friday against the Angels after tossing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. He did not issue a walk.

Alvarado pitched the ninth and 10th innings for the A's and delivered excellent results, throwing 13 of his 21 pitches for strikes and only allowing one baserunner. Even though his 5.00 ERA doesn't inspire confidence, a 1.17 WHIP and 3.26 FIP suggest he's been unlucky. Alvarado has four holds, two saves and a 22:7 K:BB across 18 innings in 16 appearances this season. Since returning to the majors June 6, he's posted a 1.08 ERA with 13 strikeouts and no walks across six outings and 8.1 innings.
