  • The Cubs placed Cabrera on the family medical emergency list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Cabrera will miss the final series of the regular season but should be back for the wild-card series, though it's no guarantee the Cubs will include him on the roster. The 28-year-old has allowed five runs with a 4:4 K:BB over four innings covering three appearances since being moved to the bullpen.

  • The Cubs reinstated Cabrera (finger) from the injured list Saturday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.

Cabrera has made just one appearance in the majors since the All-Star break due to issues with his left hamstring and, more recently, a blister on his right middle finger. Now fully healthy, the 28-year-old will return to the active roster but move into the bullpen after posting a 5.68 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 76 innings as a starter. His struggles continued into his rehab assignment (six earned runs allowed in 3.2 innings), so he will likely be limited to low-leverage work to begin with. Trent Thornton (ankle) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Cabrera (finger) will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Cabrera will be making his second rehab appearance since landing on the injured list in mid-August due to right middle finger blister. In his first outing in the minors on Tuesday with Iowa, Cabrera struck out two batters and allowed one earned run on one hit. The Cubs plan to bring Cabrera back as a reliever, but it's unclear how many more rehab outings beyond Friday he'll require prior to being activated from the IL.

  • Cabrera (blister) has resumed a throwing program, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Cabrera will do some throwing Saturday, though this won't be the first time the righty has picked up a ball since he landed on the 15-day injured list in mid-August with a right middle finger blister. The Cubs' plan is to bring Cabrera back as a reliever, but he might require a rehab assignment before that happens.

  • The Cubs placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a right middle finger blister, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Cabrera was cleared to return Sunday from a nearly two-month stint on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain. However, he pitched through a finger blister during his start against the Cardinals, and he took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two across 3.2 innings. Cabrera's new injury will keep him shelved until at least early September, though the Cubs will have a better sense of the 28-year-old right-hander's return timeline once he's cleared to begin a throwing program. Per Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network, the plan moving forward is for Cabrera to work his way back as a reliever following his third stint on the IL, so Javier Assad -- who was recalled from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move -- figures to be the Cubs' fifth man in the rotation.

  • Cabrera pitched through a blister on his right middle finger during his start in Sunday's 11-4 loss to the Cardinals, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. He dropped to 5-5 on the season after striking out two batters while allowing seven earned runs on six hits and three walks across 3.2 innings.

Cabrera made his return to the Cubs on Sunday after spending nearly two months on the shelf while recovering from a left hamstring strain. The right-hander struggled out of the gate, surrendering a two-run home run to Alec Burleson in the first inning. The day didn't get much better from there, as Cabrera worked through traffic throughout the game and needed 77 pitches to record his 11 outs. The blister may have been a factor in Cabrera's struggles and could prompt the Cubs to reconsider his role, as manager Craig Counsell was non-committal after the game regarding whether the 28-year-old would receive another turn through the rotation or move to the bullpen. Cabrera previously landed on the injured list in May due to a similar issue.
