The Cardinals acquired Rivera from the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Juan Garcia, Andrew Parker of SoxProspects.com reports.
Rivera had been designated for assignment Monday as the Red Sox did some 40-man roster housekeeping. The big lefty allowed seven runs over 10 innings during his brief time in the majors in 2026, and he posted a 2.96 ERA and 55:27 K:BB across 45.2 frames with Triple-A Worcester. Rivera will compete for a spot in the Cardinals' bullpen in 2027, but he has minor-league options remaining.

The Red Sox recalled Rivera from Triple-A Worcester and placed him on the 60-day injured list Tuesday due to a lumbar strain.
The left-hander landed on Worcester's 7-day injured list in late August due to the injury, and his transition to the MLB 60-day IL will bring an end to his 2026 season. Rivera made his first four big-league appearances and recorded a 6.30 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB in 10 innings.

The Red Sox optioned Rivera to Triple-A Worcester following Wednesday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Rivera drew the start in the second game of the twin bill but was unable to escape the first inning, coughing up four runs on three hits and two walks while recording two outs in 41 pitches. His demotion will free up a spot in the rotation that will likely be filled by Ranger Suarez (groin/illness) during Boston's upcoming series against Toronto. Until then, Alec Gamboa will remain with the big club to provide additional depth to the bullpen.
