Latest news

  • Smith allowed one run on four hits and a walk over 1.2 innings, taking a blown save in Monday's 5-4 extra-innings win over the Cardinals. He didn't record a strikeout.

Smith entered the contest in the eighth inning, but he was unable to slam the door after staying on for the ninth. Since logging a save Aug. 7 versus the Tigers, Smith has allowed seven runs (five earned) with a 17:6 K:BB over 13 innings, converting three of six save chances in that span. Overall, he has a 3.24 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB through 33.1 innings, adding four saves, seven holds and four blown saves.

  • Smith earned the save in Wednesday's 5-4, extra-inning win over the Pirates, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two batters in the 10th inning.

The Giants scored two runs in the 10th inning to grab a 5-3 lead, and Smith was called upon to protect that lead in the bottom of the frame. The Pirates' automatic runner came home to score on an RBI single from Nick Gonzales, but Smith responded by striking out each of the next two batters before getting Rafael Flores to line out to center field. It was Smith's fourth save of the season (and third since Aug. 1), and the 26-year-old right-hander has a 3.13 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 31.2 innings overall this year.

  • Smith earned the save in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Guardians, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out five over two scoreless innings.

Smith entered with a one-run lead in the eighth inning and was dominant, throwing 22 of 30 pitches for strikes to earn his third save of the campaign. The 26-year-old has now converted two of three save chances since taking over as the Giants' closer and has posted a 3.24 ERA through eight August appearances. On the season, he owns three saves and six holds while posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:12 K:BB across 26.1 innings.

  • Smith allowed a run on one hit and one walk over one inning to take a blown save in Monday's 6-3 extra-inning loss to the Astros.

Smith was tasked with protecting a one-run lead in the ninth inning and couldn't get the job done. The right-hander has received first dibs on closing duties after the Giants' trade-deadline sell-off, but he's converted just one of two chances, and he's allowed three runs over 5.1 innings in August. Overall, he has a 3.09 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through 23.1 innings while adding two saves, six holds and two blown saves.

  • Smith walked one and struck out none in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Tigers.

This was the Giants' first save chance since the trade deadline, so it's notable Smith got the call to close and answered it with a decent performance. The right-hander took a loss in two of his first three appearances in August, and he's allowed two runs with a 2:3 K:BB over 3.1 innings this month. On the year, he's posted a 2.95 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 24:11 K:BB across 21.1 innings while adding two saves and six holds. Smith is the only reliever currently on the Giants' roster with multiple saves, so he may be the slight favorite to lead a closing committee for now. That said, the 49-67 Giants are not a team to target for saves in general.

  • Smith (0-4) was tagged with the loss in relief Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.

Smith was tagged with his fourth loss of the season after allowing the game-winning hit to Ezequiel Duran in the bottom of the ninth. Despite this outcome, Smith has been pitching reasonably well since the All-Star break. In nine outings and 7.2 innings since the intermission, Smith owns a 2.35 ERA and 12.9 K/9, though his 1.57 WHIP and 5.9 BB/9 in that span are worrisome.
