  • Cease (shoulder) said Friday that he anticipates having a relatively normal offseason, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Surgery was ruled out, but Cease will get some downtime over the next several weeks to allow the inflammation in his shoulder to subside. He still expects to be ready for the start of spring training in 2027. A Cy Young candidate throughout much of the campaign, Cease finishes the 2026 season with a 2.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 239 strikeouts across 29 starts and 169 innings.

  • The Blue Jays placed Cease on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation.

The Blue Jays have already confirmed that Cease's shoulder will not require surgery, but with less than a week remaining in the regular season and Toronto out of the race for a wild-card spot, the 30-year-old's move to the injured list will officially end his season. He enjoyed one of the best campaigns of his career during his first year in Toronto, registering a 2.40 ERA and 1.10 WHIP while striking out a career-high 239 batters in 169 innings (29 starts).

  • Cease does not need surgery on his injured right shoulder, but his immediate availability is up in the air, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

An MRI showed inflammation, with Cease saying his shoulder feels a "bit heavy and achy and not normal." In the unlikely event that the Blue Jays squeeze their way into the postseason, the right-hander could eventually return to pitch. However, it's a long shot that he will be back later this week before the curtains close on the regular season. Cease has collected a 2.40 ERA and 239:78 K:BB over 169 innings covering 29 starts in his first year with the Blue Jays.

  • Cease underwent an MRI on his shoulder Saturday and won't make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Orioles, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

The right-hander surrendered four runs (one earned) on three hits and six walks over 2.2 innings Friday against the Rangers, and he was sent for imaging since he's apparently been battling some shoulder fatigue. While Cease won't make his regular turn through the rotation Wednesday in Baltimore, manager John Schneider didn't rule out the possibility of him pitching next weekend versus the Reds. The Blue Jays are three games back of the final wild-card spot and could shut Cease down if they are eliminated from playoff contention prior to next weekend.

  • Cease (11-6) took the loss against the Rangers on Friday, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits and six walks with three strikeouts over 2.2 innings.

Cease allowed four runs in the second inning, three of which crossed home after a throw by Ernie Clement hit a baserunner. Bad luck aside, the 30-year-old Cease threw just 36 of 74 pitches for strikes and has now issued 11 walks over his last two outings while failing to pitch beyond the fifth frame in any of his past three starts. He owns a 2.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 239:78 K:BB across 169 innings this season and will try to finish what has been a stellar campaign strong in a road matchup with the Orioles next week.

  • Cease (11-5) earned the win against Baltimore on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and five walks while striking out nine across five innings.

Cease got off to a shaky start by loading the bases in the first inning with no outs, but the AL Cy Young candidate got himself out of trouble by striking out the next three batters he faced. He proceeded to keep the Orioles off the board until a Pete Alonso RBI single in the fifth, though Cease did not have the opportunity to earn the quality start as he ran his put count up to 94 (60 strikes) while generating 12 whiffs. The five walks were a season high for Cease, but he recorded at least nine strikeouts for the 13th time this season, and his 236 punchouts are tied with Jacob Misiorowski for most in the majors. Cease will take a 2.38 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 166.1 innings into his next start, tentatively slated for next week on the road against the Rangers in what could be his penultimate outing of the regular season.
