  • Espino will be the Guardians' opener Wednesday in Game 3 of the ALDS against the White Sox, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

He'll be opposed by another opener in Chicago's Sean Newcomb. Espino logged a 4.11 ERA and 25:7 K:BB over 15.1 innings for the Guardians during the regular season, and he made a scoreless appearance for the White Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS. The Guardians haven't divulged plans for who will follow Espino, but Foster Griffin is a prime candidate for a bulk role if Cleveland wants to go that route.

  • Espino will serve as the Guardians' opening pitcher during Thursday's game against the Red Sox, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Espino gave up three earned runs in one inning during his most recent appearance while working as an opener last Friday against the Athletics, but Cleveland will give him an opportunity to redeem himself Thursday. He'll likely remain in the game for an inning or two before handing the ball over to bulk reliever Joey Cantillo.

  • Espino is slated to serve as the Guardians' opening pitcher for Friday's game against the Athletics, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Espino will draw his second start in less than a week, but he's not expected to cover more than an inning or two before giving way to the bullpen. Lefty Joey Cantillo is available on five days' rest and is expected to work in bulk relief behind Espino.

  • Espino will serve as the Guardians' opening pitcher for Saturday's game against the Twins in Minnesota, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Gavin Williams had been lined up to start Saturday, but the Guardians will instead push their ace back a couple days in the schedule so that he can make his next start Monday in the series opener versus the division-leading White Sox. Espino will thus be called upon to make his first MLB start Saturday, though he's pitched almost exclusively in relief both for the big club and at Triple-A Columbus this season and will likely be limited to a 1-to-2-inning appearance. Once Espino exits the game, Joey Cantillo could be called upon to pitch in bulk relief.

  • The Guardians recalled Espino from Triple-A Columbus on Friday.

Espino will return for his first stint with the big-league club since late July, when he appeared in just one game. With Columbus, the right-hander owns a 3-1 record, 3.68 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 49:22 K:BB over 36.2 innings this season. Cleveland optioned Logan Allen to Triple-A to clear a roster spot for Espino.

  • The Guardians optioned Espino to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.

As expected, Espino will head back to Triple-A after he was called up to serve as the Guardians' 27th man for Tuesday's doubleheader with the Reds. He appeared out of the bullpen in the Guardians' 2-0 loss in the second game of the twin bill, striking out three batters and issuing a walk over a scoreless inning.
