  • The Red Sox view Mead as the team's starting second baseman heading into the offseason, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Mead never had a chance to show what he could do after coming over from the Nationals at the trade deadline. He suffered a fractured wrist in just his second at-bat in a Boston uniform, and while he was added to the AL Wild Card Series roster following Roman Anthony's hand injury, he didn't log an at-bat. However, the Red Sox are confident in Mead's ability following a stellar 2026 campaign in Washington, and he should have every opportunity to win the job a the keystone. "That would be, I would say, broadly our plan," said manager Chad Tracy when asked about second base. "He was acquired for a reason. You see the numbers that kind of project at least toward a 30-home run season. And adding that, we were really excited about that."

  • The Red Sox added Mead (wrist) to their roster Wednesday for the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

Mead will be replacing Roman Anthony, who suffered a hand injury Tuesday and is now ineligible to play until the ALCS, should Boston advance that far. Mead has spent the past two months working his way back from a fractured wrist he suffered during his first game with the Red Sox, though the fact that he's been added to the wild-card roster suggests that he's feeling well enough to play. He'll remain on the bench to begin Game 2 against the Yankees but could be available to pinch hit.

  • Red Sox manager Chad Tracy indicated Tuesday that Mead (wrist) is a long shot to be available for the postseason, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Mead has been sidelined for almost two months with a fractured left wrist that he suffered in his second plate appearance after joining the Red Sox. He began hitting off a tee last week, but his overall progress has been slow and it seems he's likely to run out of time. Mead is under team control through the 2030 campaign.

  • Mead (wrist) will begin hitting off a tee Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Mead has been out since late July with a fractured wrist, and Wednesday will mark the first time since then that he's done any sort of work with a bat in his hands. He still has several more boxes to check before he can rejoin the Red Sox's lineup, though it's still possible that he returns from the IL before the end of the regular season.

  • Mead (wrist) played catch on the field at Fenway Park on Monday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Mead ditched his cast last week after follow-up imagining on his fractured left wrist came back negative. He had been performing strength and mobility exercises and has now progressed to light on-field baseball activities. Mead could be ready to return to Boston's active roster around mid-September if all goes well, but he still has lots of rehab boxes to check before making that a reality.

  • Follow-up imagining on Mead's fractured left wrist came back clean Monday, and the infielder has been cleared to begin mobility exercises and progress toward strength work, MLB.com reports.

Mead has been able to transition out of the cast he was wearing to protect his injured hand and is now donning a splint. Though he's not yet ready to take part in full baseball activities, ditching the cast at least represents a step forward in the recovery process. The 25-year-old would still appear to have a chance at making it back from the injured list around mid-to-late September.
