  • Burnes said Monday that the right shoulder injury which landed him on the 15-day injured list during the final weekend of the regular season was fatigue-related and he expects to be fine after rest, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Burnes had his Tommy John surgery rehab interrupted by a teres major strain in June, and his season ended prematurely due to what the Diamondbacks labeled as shoulder inflammation. However, it sounds as if the veteran hurler will be able to have a normal offseason after resting for a bit. Burnes allowed nine runs with an 8:4 K:BB over 10.1 innings in three starts for Arizona in 2026.

  • The Diamondbacks placed Burnes on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation.

Burnes showed diminished velocity in his last start versus the Yankees, and he served up three home runs during a four-batter span at one point. The veteran righty had a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery earlier this season when he suffered a teres major strain, though there's no indication at this point that the new injury is related. It's unclear whether Burnes has a chance to pitch at some point in the postseason, should the Diamondbacks qualify. Burnes had been slated to start Saturday's game in San Diego, but that assignment could now go to Ryne Nelson.

  • Burnes is expected to start a game during the final series of the regular season against the Padres, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Burnes was roughed up by the Yankees on Sunday, allowing four runs on five hits, including three home runs. The right-hander has allowed five home runs and four walks over 10.1 innings since being activated off the injured list. Burnes is pleased with his secondary offerings, but the velocity of his signature pitch, the cutter, is down and not creating enough separation. He's tentatively scheduled to start Saturday on the road against the Padres.

  • Burnes allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday.

Burnes served up three home runs during the third inning, prompting an early exit as the Diamondbacks can't afford to cede ground since they lag behind in the playoff race. Over his three starts so far, Burnes has surrendered nine runs across 10.1 innings with an 8:4 K:BB. He's now been tagged for five runs, and it's clear he's still got some more rust to shake off following his return from June 2025 Tommy John surgery. Burnes is tentatively projected to make his last start of the regular season at San Diego.

  • Burnes did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing five runs on five hits and no walks over 4.2 innings against the Marlins. He struck out four.

Burnes wasn't particularly effective, notably surrendering back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. It was a step back for the right-hander, as he twirled three shutout innings in his season debut last week against the Royals after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery and a teres major strain. Burnes built up to 75 pitches (48 strikes) in his home debut Monday. The 31-year-old's next start is tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Yankees.

  • Burnes didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Royals after allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two over three scoreless innings.

Burnes made his long-awaited 2026 debut after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery and immediately delivered three scoreless frames. The right-hander threw 35 of 57 pitches for strikes and worked around traffic without allowing Kansas City to capitalize, finishing his outing by striking out Salvador Perez with a runner at second. It was Burnes' first major-league appearance in 15 months, and Arizona ultimately prevailed 5-3 in 11 innings. Burnes should make his next start next week against the Marlins.
