Hampton was one of the Yankees' best pitching prospects a few years ago, but he missed all of 2025 following Tommy John surgery and struggled in 2026 upon returning, logging an 8.18 ERA and 56:34 K:BB over 55 innings across three levels in the minors. The 25-year-old has yet to advance past the Double-A level.

The Nationals designated Hampton for assignment Saturday.
Hampton was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on Sept. 12, and he'll now be pushed off the 40-man roster before making his organizational debut. His roster spot goes to Connelly Early (elbow), who will return from the 60-day IL to start Saturday's game against the Mets.

The Nationals claimed Hampton off waivers from the Yankees on Saturday and optioned him to Double-A Harrisburg.
Hampton has spent most of the season at Double-A Somerset, struggling to the tune of a 9.59 ERA and 2.16 WHIP across 35.2 innings. Despite his poor performance, the Nationals will add him to their 40-man roster and send him to their Double-A affiliate. Matt Waldron (chest) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

Hampton is the corresponding move in order to activate Aaron Judge (ribs) from the 60-day injured list. Hampton turned 25 years old last month and has spent much of the 2026 season with Double-A Somerset, where he owns an ugly 9.59 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 37:28 K:B across 35.2 innings spanning 11 starts.

Hampton made six rehab appearances in the lower levels of the minors while working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and while the results weren't sparkling, he's been activated from the IL. The right-hander received mixed results in his first action this year at Double-A Somerset, as he surrendered three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three over three frames.
