The Astros designated Salazar for assignment Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Salazar has gone just 1-for-18 in the majors while receiving limited opportunities, so the Astros will cast him off the roster and replace him with Collin Price, who was selected from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Salazar, 30, doesn't have minor-league options remaining and carries just a .512 OPS in his big-league career, making him likely to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Salazar was promoted a few hours before first pitch after it was announced that Yainer Diaz was scratched with an abdominal injury. Salazar will serve as the backup catcher to Christian Vazquez on Monday.

The Astros designated Salazar for assignment Wednesday.
The Astros chose to roster Christian Vazquez over Salazar as their backup catcher. Teams are often on the lookout for catching depth, so it's possible Salazar draws interest on waivers.
