OUT

Out · expected back around Feb 1

The move opens up a spot on the 26-man roster for Yunior Marte, who will start in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks. Schmitt underwent surgery in late July to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He's technically eligible to return in the last days of the regular season, but he'll likely be sidelined for the rest of the year given that the Giants are unlikely to qualify for the postseason.

  • The Giants transferred Schmitt (knee) to the 60-day injured list Saturday.

The move opens up a spot on the 26-man roster for Yunior Marte, who will start in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks. Schmitt underwent surgery in late July to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He's technically eligible to return in the last days of the regular season, but he'll likely be sidelined for the rest of the year given that the Giants are all but eliminated from postseason contention.

  • Schmitt (knee) underwent a debridement of his lateral meniscus Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The Giants said that Schmitt could be ready to return in roughly 6-to-8 weeks, but with San Francisco sitting at 47-62 -- well out of contention for a playoff spot -- the team likely won't be in any rush to bring him back and could opt to keep him out until 2027. Either way, he's expected to have a normal offseason and will be ready for the start of spring training.

  • Giants manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Schmitt will require arthroscopic surgery for the torn meniscus in his left knee and will "more than likely" miss the rest of the season, Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Vitello said a date hasn't been set for when Schmitt will have surgery, though the 27-year-old is slated to have his procedure performed "as soon as possible." A formal recovery timeline for Schmitt should be provided when the operation is completed, as it's not yet known whether he'll require a meniscectomy or a full meniscus repair. Schmitt would likely face a 3-to-6-week recovery if he requires the former procedure, while a full repair often entails a 4-to-6-month recovery timeline. The 45-62 Giants are well out of the mix for a playoff spot, so Schmitt doesn't look like he'll be rushed back into action even if he gets a meniscectomy and hits no snags in the rehab process. Schmitt had been in the midst of a breakout campaign before suffering the knee injury, slashing .271/.301/.483 with 21 home runs, nine stolen bases, 55 RBI and 47 runs across 409 plate appearances while making starts at all four infield spots in addition to left field.

  • The Giants placed Schmitt on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left knee meniscus tear.

The 27-year-old faces the possibility of being shut down for the season, even if the severity of the tear isn't a worst-case scenario. In a corresponding move, the Giants selected Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.

  • Schmitt left Monday's game against the Brewers due to left knee discomfort and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Schmitt appeared to tweak his knee on a hard turn around first base during Monday's series opener and was forced to come out of the game. Manager Tony Vitello stated after the matchup that he expects Schmitt to miss some time, indicating that a trip to the injured list is likely. The club should have a formal diagnosis following Tuesday's scans, at which point a timetable for the 27-year-old's return could become more clear.

  • Schmitt left Monday's game against the Brewers due to an apparent lower-body injury, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Schmitt looped a single into right field in the bottom of the second inning, but he looked to twist either his left knee or left ankle while putting on the brakes around first base. Christian Koss entered the game to pinch run for Schmitt, who wasn't able to put much weight on his left leg on his way off the diamond. The club should have another update on Schmitt's injury after sending him for further evaluation.
