Latest news

  • The Mariners reinstated Vargas (lat) from the 60-day injured list Friday.

Vargas has been on the injured list all season with a strained right lat, though he was cleared to begin playing in rehab games Aug. 8 and has since fired 4.2 shutout innings between High-A Everett and Triple-A Tacoma. Now fully healthy, the 26-year-old righty will likely claim a middle-relief role with the Mariners. Nick Davila was optioned to Tacoma in a corresponding move, and Matt Brash (lat) was transferred to the 60-day IL to free up a 40-man spot.

  • Vargas (lat) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with High-A Everett on Saturday night, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Vargas has been sidelined due to a right lat strain since late March. The right-hander suffered a setback about a month later that caused him to pause his throwing progression, but he's since been able to work his way back to the point of taking part in minor-league games. Given the length of his absence, Vargas will likely need to make multiple rehab appearances before he's ready to be activated.

  • Vargas (lat) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday and is nearing a rehab assignment, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Vargas opened the season on the injured list due to a right lat strain, an injury severe enough for him to transfer to the 60-day IL in early April. However, it looks like he's close to making his 2026 major-league debut. If all goes well with his bullpen session and upcoming rehab assignment, Vargas could rejoin the Mariners in mid-August.

  • Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Tuesday that Vargas (lat) recently began a throwing program and could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list around the Aug. 3 trade deadline, Zac Hereth of 710 AM Seattle Sports reports.

Vargas has been on the shelf all season while recovering from a right lat strain, which he sustained in spring training. Even though Vargas projects to serve as a middle reliever and won't need to get stretched out for more than an inning or two, the Mariners are content to have him move through his throwing program slowly. A more definitive target date for his return should become available once he's ready to head out on a rehab assignment.

  • Vargas (lat) has suffered a setback in his recovery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Vargas has been on the injured list since the beginning of the regular season due to a strained right lat, and his latest setback will require him to restart his throwing progression completely. He won't be eligible to return from the IL until May 23, though it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to return by then.

  • The Mariners transferred Vargas (lat) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

The transaction will clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of outfielder/first baseman Connor Joe, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma. Vargas has been out all season while recuperating from a right lat strain and now won't be eligible to return until late May. It's not clear whether Vargas has resumed throwing or remains shut down.
