Latest news

  • Cavalli will not make another start this season, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.

Cavalli is healthy, as this is purely a workload-related shutdown. The right-hander reached the 200-strikeout mark in his last outing and, at 169.2 innings for the season, is almost 50 innings past last year's total, so it makes sense for the Nationals to pull the plug. Cavalli -- who signed a four-year, $47 million contract extension last week -- will finish with a 13-5 record, 3.02 ERA and 200:48 K:BB over 169.2 frames covering 32 starts.

  • Cavalli (13-5) earned the win Friday against the Cardinals after allowing four hits while striking out six over five scoreless innings. He did not issue a walk.

Cavalli signed a four-year contract extension Friday that includes a club option for 2031, and he celebrated with another strong showing on the mound. He struck out the side in the first inning and didn't issue a walk over 73 pitches (55 strikes) while the Nationals built a 9-0 advantage before his departure. Cavalli recorded his 200th strikeout of the season on his final pitch, becoming the fifth pitcher in Nationals history to reach that mark in a season. He's avoided the loss in each of his last eight starts, posting a 1.72 ERA and a 67:11 K:BB across 47 innings in that stretch, and he's lined up to make his next start Wednesday on the road against the Tigers.

  • The Nationals signed Cavalli to a four-year contract extension Friday that includes a club option for 2031.

Per Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic, the deal is worth $47 million guaranteed and $70 million if the option is picked up. Cavalli had been slated to become a free agent following the 2029 season, but his new deal will buy out at least one and perhaps two years of free agency. The 28-year-old has had a breakout 2026 campaign, collecting a 3.12 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 194:48 K:BB over 164.2 innings covering 31 starts.

  • Cavalli didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Angels, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out nine.

The Nationals needed a three-run eighth inning to take Cavalli off the hook for a tough loss, but the right-hander still delivered his 18th quality start of the season on 96 pitches (60 strikes). Cavalli has finally emerged as the ace the team was hoping to get when it selected him 22nd overall in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft -- he hasn't given up more than three runs in a start since July 5, and over his last 12 outings he's reeled off a 2.13 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 89:17 K:BB through 72 innings while posting a 7-1 record. He lines up to make his next start at home next week against the Phillies.

  • Cavalli allowed two runs on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out eight and walking none over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday.

Cavalli returned to form after his last start versus Miami was cut short after four scoreless innings when he was struck on the calf by a batted ball. The right-hander has logged quality starts in 10 of his last 11 outings. Cavalli now has a 3.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 185:46 K:BB through 158.2 innings over 30 starts in a breakout campaign. He'll look to keep rolling at home versus the Angels in his next start.

  • Cavalli (calf) is listed as the Nationals' probable pitcher for Saturday's game against the Dodgers.

Cavalli was removed from his last start Saturday versus the Marlins after four innings when he was hit in the calf by a comebacker. However, he checked out fine after the contest and handled his normal between-starts throwing routine with no concerns. Cavalli will enter Saturday's start having gone 7-1 with a 1.83 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 67:14 K:BB over 54 innings covering nine outings in the second half.
