  • The Astros placed Matthews on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left knee inflammation, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Matthews injured his knee while making a diving catch during Tuesday's game against Seattle. The 24-year-old had missed most of the second half due to an injury to the same knee, so the Astros will play it safe and send him back to the injured list, ending his regular season early. Lucas Spence was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Matthews was removed from Tuesday's game against the Mariners with an apparent leg injury, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Matthews came up limping after making a diving catch in center field during the second inning of Tuesday's game, and he was eventually pulled in the sixth. The fact that he was able to remain in the game for a while after making the play is an encouraging sign, though the Astros will likely provide more information on his health in the near future.

  • The Astros reinstated Matthews (knee) from the 60-day injured list Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Matthews has missed the entire second half due to a left knee sprain, but he's now been cleared to return and aid the Astros in their push for a postseason appearance. The 24-year-old will almost certainly be limited to a bench role, however, as he owns a .582 OPS through 226 plate appearances this season and went just 1-for-24 with 12 strikeouts during his rehab assignment. Jorge Barrosa was DFA'd in a corresponding move.

  • The Astros transferred Matthews (knee) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Ethan Pecko, who was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Angels. Matthews has been on the shelf since July 17 due to a left knee sprain. He had been targeting a return to action for the Astros before the end of the month and had resumed hitting, fielding ground balls and running as of Aug. 8, per MLB.com. However, as a result of his move to the 60-day IL, Matthews won't be eligible for activation until Sept. 12.

  • General manager Dana Brown said Sunday that the Astros are targeting "mid-August, potentially the third week of August" for Matthews' (knee) return from the 10-day injured list, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Per MLB.com, Matthews has been cleared to field grounders and hit on the field, but he has yet to resume running at full speed since landing on the injured list July 17 due to a left knee sprain. Before going down with the injury, Matthews had made six starts in center field over a seven-game stretch, but he'll be in search of playing time elsewhere once he returns after Houston acquired Daulton Varsho from Toronto on Monday.

  • The Astros placed Matthews on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left knee sprain.

In a corresponding move, the Astros selected Lucas Spence's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land, and Spencer will man center field in his major-league debut Friday against Baltimore. Matthews was injured in the Astros' final game before the All-Star break. He's hitting .197 with seven homers, 22 RBI, 23 runs scored, four stolen bases and a 15:71 BB:K across 226 plate appearances this season.
