Rooker won't have enough time to return this season from a cartilage tear in his left knee that he suffered in June, but his return to hitting is a good sign that he'll be ready to go by next Opening Day. • Rooker (knee) was cleared to begin a hitting progression Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Rooker won't have enough time to return this season from a cartilage tear in his left knee that he suffered in June, but his return to hitting is an encouraging sign that he'll be ready to go by Opening Day. • The Athletics transferred Rooker (knee) to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Rooker has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season, and he recently underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training in February. When healthy this season, Rooker slashed a disappointing .200/.281/.389 with 10 homers, 29 RBI, 20 runs scored, two stolen bases and a 19:65 BB:K across 203 trips to the plate.

  • Rooker will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a cartilage tear in his left knee, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.

Rooker was re-evaluated Tuesday after making slow progress in his recovery from a bone bruise in his left knee, which has been bothering him since early June. Test results revealed torn cartilage in the 31-year-old's knee, so he'll go under the knife to address the issue, putting an early end to his 2026 campaign. Jonah Heim has been getting regular starts at DH with Rooker on the IL and could now remain in that role for the rest of the year.

  • Rooker was re-evaluated at Stanford for his knee injury Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Rooker landed on the injured list June 12 due to a bone bruise in his left knee and has progressed slowly in his rehab, beginning a running and swinging progression Monday. "I wouldn't say that his progress has stopped," Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Tuesday. "... it hasn't progressed as efficient as we'd like. So he's down there going through another exam." More clarity regarding Rooker's status and recovery timeline should come following the results of his latest evaluation.

  • Rooker (knee) is still not participating in any baseball activities as of Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Rooker hit the injured list June 12 due to a bone bruise in his left knee and has yet to make much headway in his recovery. The Athletics hope to have a better idea of his status next week, though that suggests a return before the end of June is unlikely. Before being shelved, the veteran hit .200/.281/.389 with 10 homers, 29 RBI, 20 runs and two stolen bases across 48 games.

  • The Athletics placed Rooker on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Tuesday, due to a bone bruise in his left knee.

Rooker was out of the Athletics' lineup both Tuesday and Wednesday against the Brewers while tending to a left knee issue. The injury is severe enough for him to warrant a stint on the IL, though it's unclear whether he's facing a stint longer than the minimum. With Rooker sidelined, Shea Langeliers, Jonah Heim and Carlos Cortes are all candidates to see more reps as the team's designated hitter. Jacob Wilson (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.
