Latest news

  • Williamson (5-5) took the loss Sunday against Toronto, striking out three while allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in three innings.

Williamson didn't end the year on a positive note, as he couldn't make it to the fourth inning despite tossing 76 pitches. The left-hander was part of the Reds' Opening Day rotation, but a shoulder injury cost him most of the season and derailed his campaign. After logging a career-worst 5.30 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 36:30 K:BB in 52.2 innings, he may have to battle for a roster spot again next spring.

  • Williamson (5-4) earned the win after allowing three hits over six scoreless innings against Atlanta on Tuesday. He struck out two.

Williamson made his first start since Sept. 2 against the Padres. The left-hander recorded his first quality start since April 6 on Tuesday. Through eight starts (11 games) this season, Williamson owns a 4.89 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33:27 K:BB over 49.2 innings. The 28-year-old is slated to start Game 162 against the Blue Jays on Sunday.

  • Williamson will start Tuesday's game in Atlanta.

After working out of the bullpen in each of his previous three appearances, Williamson will re-enter the rotation with the Reds placing Chase Burns (groin) on the 15-day injured list Sunday. Williamson had covered four-plus innings in two of those appearances while piggybacking Burns, so he should be sufficiently stretched out as he rejoins the rotation. Williamson could be in store for two starts this week, with another turn potentially coming in the season finale Sunday in Toronto.

  • Williamson (3-4) allowed six runs (three earned) on three hits, five walks and a hit batsman while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Dodgers on Monday.

Williamson has been tabbed to handle a piggyback role with ace Chase Burns as the Reds focus on managing Burns' workload late in the season. Williamson wasn't good in this tough matchup, with a three-run home run by Teoscar Hernandez in the sixth inning accounting for most of the damage. For the season, Williamson is at a 5.97 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 28:27 K:BB through 37.2 innings. While working in bulk relief theoretically gives the southpaw a better chance at wins, the Reds have three of their last five series of the year coming against division-leading teams. Burns and Williamson are projected to work in tandem again over the weekend in Milwaukee.

  • Williamson (3-3) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 7-3 victory over the Padres. He struck out five.

Activated from the 60-day IL earlier in the day after recovering from shoulder trouble, the southpaw looked like he was headed for a quick exit in his first big-league start since late April after he served up a two-run homer to Ty France in the first inning and allowed another run to cross the plate in the second. Williamson settled in after that, however, and gave his offense a chance to get rolling, eventually leaving the mound after 87 pitches (58 strikes). The Reds plan to have him work in tandem with Chase Burns next time through the rotation to help lessen the young righty's workload, which would set Williamson up to make his next appearance on the road early next week against the Dodgers.

  • The Reds activated Williamson (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Williamson is slated to make a spot start Wednesday versus the Padres, and will be used in a piggyback role with Chase Burns afterwards. The left-hander held a 6.11 ERA and 19:20 K:BB over 28 frames in six starts for the Reds earlier this season and has missed a chunk of the year with a shoulder issue.
